The universal use of artificial lighting has caused a wide-spread light pollution. The illuminations of buildings and street lights cause lightening of the skies in large cities and their widely defined surrounds. This phenomenon hampers astronomical observation. The light pollution interferes with many nocturnal animals active at night and even affects humans by distorting melatonin production which leads to increased headaches and general fatigue.
