Background. Carbonated and non-carbonated beverages manufactured based on mineral and spring waters have been present at the Polish market shortly, and their production and sales are regularly growing. The products have become commonly known as flavoured waters. Objective. The aim of the work was to identify and assess the content of carbohydrates used for sweetening mineral and spring water-based beverages and to estimate a concentration of inorganic anions. Material and methods. The study was undertaken for 15 mineral and spring water-based beverages subject to an analysis contents of fructose, glucose and sucrose with the high-performance liquid chromatography method with ELSD detection) and chlorides, nitrates and sulphates contents using the ion chromatography method. Results. A chromatographic analysis has confirmed the total contents of sugar declared by the manufacturers. The carbohydrates identified included fructose, glucose and sucrose (added sugar). Chlorides and sulphates were found in the content of all the analysed beverages while nitrates were not determined in only one of the 15 examined beverages. Conclusions. Mass consumption of mineral and spring water-based beverages should be considered as an important source of sugar and their excessive consumption may be disadvantageous for human health. A consumer should be informed by a manufacturer about a daily dose of sugar in a portion of a drink in per cents, and the easiest way to do it is to provide GDA marks on the label. Mineral and spring water-based beverages do not pose threats to consumer health in terms of their contents of inorganic ions: chlorides, nitrates and sulphates.
Flower development of Ranunculus asiaticus L. growing in the University Botanic Garden was divided into six stages (I - VI): tight bud stage (I), loose bud stage (II), half open stage (III), open flower stage (IV), partially senescent stage (V) and senescent stage (VI). The average life span of an individual flower after it is fully open is about 5 days. Membrane permeability of sepal tissues estimated as electrical conductivity of ion leachates (^S), increased as the development proceeded through various stages. The content of sugars in the petal tissues increased during the flower opening period and then declined during senescence. The soluble proteins registered a consistent decrease with the simultaneous increase in specific protease activity and a-amino acid content during different stages of flower development and senescence. The content of total phenols registered an initial increase as the flowers opened, and then declined during senescence.
Five sugar beet cultivars and three levels of foliar treatments (control, Humix universal plus and Biafit Gold) were examined in the field trial without irrigation founded in the years 2005-2007 on experimental base of Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra in Dolna Malanta. The influence of weather condition on all the observed parameters was statistically highly significant. The used bioactive leaf preparations increased root yield, digestion and refined sugar content. Biafit Gold had positive impact on root yield and Humix universal plus on digestion and refined sugar content (statistically not significant). Cultivar had statistically high significant influence on all the observed parameters.
In the flowers of Allium there are found septal nectaries; in particular species, their outlet can be located in different parts of the ovary. The inflorescences of these plants are a rich source of nectar for insects. The location and structure of septal nectaries in the flowers of Allium giganteum Regel were investigated. Light and scanning electron microscopy was used. The septal nectaries were found to be located in the lower part of the ovary and in the gynophore on which the ovary is borne. Nectar is secreted into the nectary slits from which it flows through the ducts to three openings located in the upper part of the gynophore, from whence it gets outside in the vicinity of the expanded parts of the filaments. Sugar concentration in the nectar of A. giganteum averaged 54.5%, while sugar weight per flower was determined to be 0.36 mg. When converted into sugar weight per inflorescence, numbering more than 2,000 flowers, it was 771.7 mg.
Cucumber is one of the most popular vegetables in Poland. This vegetable species is characterised by high requirements in terms of soil temperature and moisture. The utilization of polyethylene mulch in combination with drip irrigation has played a major role in the increases in production of cucumber. The benefits associated with the use of this cultivation method include earlier and higher yields, reduced soil evaporation, reduced weed populations, reduced fertilizer leaching, greater water use efficiency, reduced soil compaction, control of certain pests, and cleaner harvested product. In years 2002, 2003 and 2005 experiments were conducted to study the impact of soil mulching with black polyethylene on Akord F1 cucumber yields. Plants were cultivated on sandy loam soil using irrigation and fertigation applied with the assistance of drip lines. No significant differences were observed in levels of total and marketable yields of fruits as well as in dry matter and total carbohydrate contents in fruits obtained from plants cultivated in mulched and unmulched soils. Irrigation efficiency, on the soil mulched with black polyethylene was higher than on the soil without mulching.
Proximate composition, profi les of amino acids, sugars, organic acids, vitamins and minerals of fourteen Turkish hazelnut varieties harvested in 2013 and 2014 were investigated. Glutamic acid, arginine and aspartic acid were the most predominant amino acids, representing of about 50% of hazelnut protein. Individual amino acid profi les showed signifi cant differences depending upon the harvest year (p<0.05). Concentration of sucrose was the highest followed by fructose, glucose, stachyose, raffi nose and myo-inositol, respectively. Phytic acid was predominant organic acid in all varieties, followed by malic acid. Independent of the variety, hazelnuts were rich in pantothenic acid, nicotinic acid, pyridoxal, biotin, thiamine, nicotinamide. Pantothenic and nicotinic acid were signifi cantly higher in most of the varieties in harvest year 2014. Potassium was the most predominant mineral, followed by magnesium, calcium, sodium, manganese, zinc, iron and copper, respectively.
Asparagus plants cv. “Epos” were planted in the aeroponic system with recirculation in two cycles. The effect of asparagus plant age and crown size on fern growth were studied. The results show that the age of asparagus plants affected the number of ferns – the number of assimilation shoots increased with age – while the weight of asparagus crowns had an effect on the number and total weight of shoots. An increase in crown weight by about 1000 g caused an increase in the number of shoots by about 6, while the weight of one shoot increased by approx. 144 g. The age of aasparagus plants was also a significant factor for dry weight, % Brix and total carbohydrate contents in roots before the assimilation season as well as glucose, fructose, sucrose, GFS and total carbohydrate contents in roots after the assimilation season.
W pracy przedstawiono ocenę wpływu modyfikacji systemu nawożenia buraków cukrowych na zawartość sacharozy, technologiczny plon cukru, współczynnik alkaliczności i teoretyczny wydatek cukru. Doświadczenie prowadzono w dwu etapach (dwu latach) w trzech gospodarstwach.
The purpose of this work was the evaluation of yielding and the content of some chemical ingredients of Japanese bunching onion yield obtained from forcing in greenhouse conditions. Plants used for forcing were from field cultivation and had the pseudostem trimmed in the autumn of each year (2002, 2003 and 2004) at the height of 2-4 and 8-10 cm. In the spring of the following year (2003, 2004 and 2005) from the middle of March, the plants were forced in a heated greenhouse (temperature 16-20°C) and an unheated one (temperature 6-12 °C). The whole yield was evaluated when the plants reached the market size for bunching. The weight and height were determined in the plants, as well as the number of laterals and leaves in clusters. In green shoots and the pseudostem, the content of dry weight, total and reducing sugars, L-ascorbic acid, flavonoids and phenolic acids were determined. Very high yield of plants useful for bunching was obtained (average 13.7 kg·m⁻² of area). The plants with a longer pseudostem before forcing yielded better. The conditions of forcing did not have a significant influence on the size of the obtained yield, but the content of L-ascorbic acid and flavonoids was much higher (especially in green shoots) in the plants from forcing in the unheated greenhouse. Lower temperature at the time of forcing was favorable to higher reducing sugar content, especially in the pseudostem. Japanese bunching onion turned out to be useful for forcing for harvest in bunching form.
This paper presents the study concerning the influence of hydrocortisone and progesterone on the growth and the content of protein and sugar in the green alga Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (Chlorophyceae). Progesterone, at the concentration of 10-4 M, showed a lethal effect on C. vulgaris and hydrocortisone - at the concentration of 10-3 M. Hydrocortisone, in range of concentrations 5×10-5-10-4 M, showed the greatest stimulating activity in C. vulgaris on the content of sugar, in comparison to progesterone, which has a most stimulating effect in the range of concentrations 5×10-5-5×10-6 M. It was found that in C. vulgaris progesterone is more active than hydrocortisone on the content of cellular sugar. However, progesterone acted inhibitory on the content of protein. The lowest inhibition of sugar and protein was observed under influence of hydrocortisone at the concentration of 5×10-6 M. The biological activity of hydrocortisone in the C. vulgaris studied was greater than that of progesterone with regard to the protein content.
