The paper presents the results of a pilot study on post-secondary school students' interest in geography itself and geography university studies as well as an approach to geography as a scientific discipline. The continuous drop in post-secondary students' population poses a problem to universities, including the field of geography, therefore the research findings may be the support for taking steps intended to counteract the decline in geography studies popularity.
Unemployment, which also hits people with higher education, is one of the major socio-economic problems in Poland. This unfavourable situation is caused by the wrong conception of higher education which doesn't prepare graduates for employers' requirements. Curriculum strategies that have been followed contributed to the situation where many faculties at universities are perceived as the admission pass to professions poorly paid or even as those ones that don't give the opportunity of finding any job in the future. The author of this paper presents results of research performed among graduates of geographical studies in the system of two-stage studies (Bachelor's three-year studies and Master's two-year studies) and Master's five year-studies at Pedagogical University of Cracow. The main aims of this research were as follows: • Getting to know how graduates assess the competences acquired during their studies. These competences are regarded as the key ones in tuning research on a European scale; • Getting to know geographical studies graduates' plans, expectations and attitudes towards challenges of labour market. The results obtained proved that geography graduates, especially those with Bachelor's degree assessed most of the key competences as good and very good. Criteria which are taken into account while choosing a job are not dependent on money. The dominant criteria are the ability to join work with passions and the prospects for professional development. Respondents declared the intention to look for a job in the education sector and the civil service by means of the direct contact with an employer.
The analysis of grades listed on student diploma based on the academic regulations binding at the University of Life Sciences from the 1st of October 2012 following the completion of the first or second cycle of studies. The relations between the following grades were determined: cumulative grade point average (GPA), the grade assigned for dissertation, the grade for diploma exam – the grade listed on the diploma. Relations are expressed by parameters which make up a 4-dimensional table. The grade listed on the diploma depends on the student’s knowledge and skills but also on the means of rounding the grade itself as well as its separate components. Methods of rounding are most often stipulated in binding academic regulations. A method of reducing 4-dimensional table including all potential relations to a 3-dimensional one has been proposed.
At the background of the wide description of the current approaches to the definition of value and significance of the natural environment (green infrastructure) in cities, this article presents the range of research studies that were carried out, are now carried out and are planned in the Institute of Spatial Management and Housing which constitute the whole of site works of the Institute executed on its own and with cooperation with the SGGW and Polish Academy of Sciences PAN as well as planned research topics. The studies are concerned with the implementation of a new philosophy of strategic planning and developing greenery projects based on the benefit maximization model (of ecosystem services) for prevention of loss of biodiversity and degradation of the natural environment in the conditions of urban city structures. The works mainly aim at preparing strategic models of sustainable natural environment development especially concerned with city trees and at using these examples to assess the possibility of implementing the city policy in terms of increasing the ecological efficiency of the green infrastructure defined by the EU as the natural capital of Europe.The remaining articles published in this edition of the Man and the Environment quarterly describe the results of the up-to-date studies in Praga Północ and literature studies and are concerned with: – analysis and structure of greenery areas and objects; – assessment of habitat conditions and development barriers to the existing trees; – analysis of the distance of trees and shrubs from structures; – results of poll studies concerned with the suggestions on border parameters of protected trees in Poland. Information presented in these articles are going to be used during the process of implementation of the undertaken research tasks and for comparison analysis of the results of similar studies in other Polish cities and foreign cities in order to define the coefficients of ecological efficiency of city areas. As a summary of the discussed cycle of studies carried out by the IGPiM, visualizations of the suggested solutions within spatial management of Praga Północ areas have been created to present what could be achieved as a result of the planned revitalization of Praga Północ – as an example of multidisciplinary cooperation of planners, local authorities and self-government and local population.
W opracowaniu przedstawiono rys historyczny Katedry Ogrodnictwa oraz powiązanych z jej działalnością studiów ogrodniczych na Wydziale Rolniczym Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego we Wrocławiu. Obecnie w ramach Katedry funkcjonują 4 zakłady i pracownie oraz 2 stacje badawczo-dydaktyczne wykorzystywane w szerokim zakresie do praktycznego kształcenia studentów. Rozwój badań i dydaktyki zapoczątkowany w 1945 r. doprowadził do utworzenia studiów na poziomie inżynierskim i magisterskim, a od 2007 r. także studiów doktoranckich z zakresu ogrodnictwa. Prowadzone badania o charakterze poznawczym i utylitarnym dotyczą szerokiego zakresu zagadnień związanych z uprawą warzyw, roślin zielarskich, roślin sadowniczych i ozdobnych, a także z nawożeniem roślin ogrodniczych.
