The aim of the study was to inventory potential habitats and localities of Eastern eggar Eriogaster catax (Linnaeus, 1758) on the route of expressway S5 Poznań-Wrocław at the Kaczkowo-Korzeńsko section. Insects from documented localities overlapping with the planned expressway were translocated to new locations, guaranteeing development and existence of this protected insect species.

This paper presents a proposal for commercial measures aiming at protecting the Ergates faber (Linnaeus 1761). Ergates faber is a beetle species (Coleoptera) from the longhorn beetles’ family, Cerambycidae, and remained protected in Poland since 2001 following the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of 26th September 2001 (Journal of Laws 2001, no. 130, item 1456), while it was never listed in any exhibit to the Habitats Directive. In order to protect the Ergates faber in Poland it was necessary to draft a new set of principles for commercial forestry that would best facilitate the preservation of the species. The paper also indicates sites of this beetle’s occurrence never published before.

A numerical analysis of the phytosociological relevés from ancient and recent woodland on a mesic forest site in central Poland was carried out. Three groups of forest stands were recognised: planted with Pinus, recent and ancient oak-hornbeam Tilio-Carpinetum. The species of ancient woodland occurred mainly in ancient oak-hornbeam forest stands, however some ferns: Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. filix-mas, and an orchid species Epipactis helleborine, are to be found mainly or exclusively in recent forests. The occurrence of ancient forest species in recent woods may be putatively explained by long-distance wind dispersal or by the thriving in situ in unrecognised small wood patches. Twelve ancient woodland indicators (i.e. 36% of a total number found in the region under study) occur exclusively in ancient woodland. It underlines the role of passive species protection in the maintenance of the regional species diversity.

The diminution of biological diversity is widely observed throughout the world in a variety of plant communities. Species protection itself is an insufficient form of preservation of the Siberian Iris population. A serious threat to this species is systematic diminishing of its typical habitat – Molinietum caeruleae plant community, i.e. Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils. Its maintenance is possible only through conservation and restoration of the plant communities in which it occurs.

We performed a detailed overall field survey of all specimens of the wild service tree Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz in the research area in the Hádecká planinka National Nature Reserve. This research area, with an area of 80 ha, contains one of the largest populations of the tree in Europe. In all, 1713 specimens were found. This study provides a detailed description of the wild service tree population in the area. The basic biometric parameters (height, GBH, social position, fertility) of thepopulation were assessed. The main emphasis of our analysis was to evaluate the population's age structure. We used estimates of age structure based on the Chapman-Richards growth function to perform this evaluation. During the past twenty years, the natural regeneration of the wild service tree in the nature reserve has decreased considerably. At an experimental plot where a high forest was converted to a coppice with standards, regeneration occurred over 75% of the area. Root suckers were found at the beginning of the observation period. After 2–3 years, generative regeneration occurred.

Demographic studies often point out the poor state of insular populations of Hacquetia epipactis. The species is under strict protection. This is due to both natural and anthropogenic factors, including the collection of intact plants for gardens. As a form of integrated protection, an attempt at ex situ propagation was undertaken using seeds and tissue culture.

Podczas awarii reaktora w Czarnobylu w 1986 r. przedostała się do atmosfery chmura pary z radionuklidami. Niektóre z radionuklidów, ze względu na długotrwałą emisję promieniowania beta i gamma, mogą wywoływać odlegle negatywne skutki biologiczne. Duże powinowactwo do wielu produktów rozszczepienia wykazuje tkanka kostna. W celu potwierdzenia tych założeń zbadano promieniowanie gamma całych fragmentów żuchwy losi w komorze scyntylatora oraz promieniowanie beta z ekstraktu kostnego żuchwy. Otrzymane wyniki wykazały, że w badanych żuchwach łosi z terenów północno-wschodniej Polski nie doszło do retencji radionuklidów.

This paper presents results of research into vascular flora of former manor park complex in Tychowo–Wyszkowo situated in the Sławno Commune (mesoregion: Sławno Plain). 388 species represent vascular flora of Tychowo park, whereas there are 212 species in Wyszkowo that belong to 81 families. Ten species covered by legal protection were reported: Colchicum autumnale, Epipactis helleborine, Galanthus nivalis, Leucojum vernum, Lilium martagon, Lonicera periclymenum, Ononis spinosa, Pinus mugo, Sorbus intermedia and Taxus baccata. From the rare vascular plants in the scale of the Region of the analysed park there are: Achillea ptarmica, Conium maculatum, Corydalis intermedia, Crepis paludosa, Dryopteris cristata, Echinops sphaerocephalus, Juncus tenuis, Lathraea squamaria, Ornithopus perpusillus and Rubus odoratus.
