The material consisted of the data concerning reproductive performance traits of the Polish Large White sows, which was used in the breeding value estimation using the BLUP method in second half of May 2008. The analysis covered sows, which gave from one to eight litters. The following two indexes were computed: WI – total number of days from sow birth date to last litter delivery day over the sum of piglets born, and WII – total number of days from sow birth date to last litter delivery day over the sum of piglets in day 21 of live. The values of both indexes decreased with successive litters. Regression coefficients were estimated on the basis of correlation between individual reproduction traits and indexes. The impact of individual traits upon the indexes changed in successive litters during the period of the use of a sow. The impact of total number of piglets in a litter decreased, and the impact of the period between first farrowing and last litter delivery increased. Considering this, longevity of sows may affect pork production profitability.
The purpose of the studies was to determine the number of piglets born (NPB) and reared until 21 day (NPR) by the sows of Polish Landrace and Polish Large White breeds, differing in the number of teats. For calculations, the results from breeding pig houses of the Mazovian region, collected during the years 2004-2009, were employed. Three groups of females were distinguished for the particular breeds: those ones, possessing 14, 15 or 16 teats. The number of records for Polish Large White was equal to 1,019 and for Polish Land-race, it was 1,732. The statistically confirmed differences were revealed in respect of NPB by the groups of females, possessing 14, 15 or 16 teats (P < 0.01) and NPR until the age of 3 weeks by the sows of the same breed, possessing 14 or 15 teats (P < 0.05). The differences in NPB and NPR in the sows which possessed 14, 15 or 16 teats were not statistically confirmed (P < 0.05). Any univo-cal relationships between the deaths of the piglets until 21 day of life and the number of teats in the sows of the examined breeds were not found; the level of losses varied from 10.60 to 12.65%. The obtained results indicate that the number of teats in the sows may affect the results of rearing the piglet until 21 day. The access to mother milk is not, however, the only one indicators of success in rearing of the progeny.
Seventy carcasses were assessed of sows slaughtered 31 days after the first farrowing. The carcasses were divided into three weight groups: less than 115 kg (n=24), from 115 to 125 kg (n=21) and above 125 kg (n=25). Generally, a rise in carcass weight was followed by an increase in backfat thickness and in loin eye area. However, significant intergroup differences were identified In this respect only between sows with the lowest carcass weight and those of the other two groups. An increase in carcass weight was also accompanied by a higher belly and backfat kontent of carcass and by external fat content of ham, with simultaneous lower proportion of neck In the carcass and of bones and meat content of ham. Meat from the lightest carcasses (up to 115 kg) showed significantly lowest dry matter and fat content. In the remaining two groups, the dry matter and fat contents of meat were higher and comparable. The content of the other chemical components as well as the values of physico-chemical traits of pork were similar in all groups. Meat from the heaviest carcasses received higher scores for tenderness and juiciness.
One of the possibilities for estimating pancreas activity is the estimation of zymogene granule content in pancreatic follicular cells. In the present study, the degree of pancreatic activity wasmeasured in piglets from sows receiving enzymatic stimulating complex throughout pregnancy and during the lactation period. The pancreas was collected for ultrastructural examination from 1-day-old and 21-day-old piglets. The enzyme preparation influenced the ultrastructural structure of the piglet pancreas, but the secretory cells in these animals did not confirm a more intensive course of creation and maturation processes. The accumulation of granules in extra-secretory pancreatic cells was observed, with a large volume of these granules and granular crinophagy observed in older piglets. The findings indicate a slow process of granule release, which may be the result of overproduction, lower requirements for enzymes contained in the granules, or both.
The aim of this study was to assessed the differences in embryos quality between the natural estrus and two systems of estrus synchronization in multiparous sows and prepuberal gilts. In this experiment, multiparous sows (n = 63) and prepuberal gilts (n = 42) were used. The subgroups of these animals were treated with PMSG (1500 U.I.) + hCG (500 U.I.) or PG-600 synchronization systems. These animals were inseminated twice, 24 and 36 h after hCG injection. The control gilts (n = 20) were from the third subgroup and were inseminated two times at 12 h intervals during their natural estrus cycles. A statistically significant increased number of corpora lutea (CL) and embryos was observed between natural estrus and both synchronization systems in multiparous sows (p < 0.001). There were no differences found in the number of degenerative embryos isolated from both ovaries between PMSG + hCG, PG-600, and natural estrus groups in multiparous sows (p = 0.484), (p = 0.279), (p = 0.213), (p = 0.138), respectively. However, an increased number of unfertilized oocytes in multiparous sows after treatment with PMSG + hCG as compared to control animals (p = 0.041) was observed. A statistically higher number of embryos after treatment with PMSG + hCG was also observed in the separate groups of multiparous sows and prepuberal gilts as compared to PG-600 treated animals. No differences were found, however, in the number of degenerative embryos between those two separate groups of animals after treatment with PMSG + hCG and PG-600 of both ovaries: (p = 0.175), (p = 0.344), (p = 0.122), and (p = 0.055), respectively. It can be suggested that the differences in the number of embryos isolated from both ovaries after these two treatments systems in prepuberal gilts and multiparous sows may be a result of age-dependent different response to gonadotropins and the reproductive competence of these females.
Effect of the backfat thickness at point P2 during insemination on the selected parameters of colostrum and milk of the sows. The studies included 32 females F1 (PL x PLW), inseminated with the semen from Duroc boars. The females were assigned to two groups: L – “lean” sows: P2 ≤18 mm at mating (n=16 heads) and F – “fat” sows: P2 >18 mm (n=16 heads). The observations were carried on from the day of effective mating /insemination throughout the period of gestation and nutrition until weaning (35 day of lactation). Fatness of the sows (measurements of backfat thickness at points P2 and P4) and their muscling (height of M. longissimus dorsi at point P4M) at mating and in high pregnancy (104±1-2 day of gestation) were controlled. The samples of colostrum and milk were collected from all sows (64 samples in total). Basic chemical compositions, somatic cell count – SCC and active acidity – pH, were determined. Thickness of backfat at point P2 did not have any influence on chemical composition of colostrum and milk, SCC and pH; in spite of it. The control of the sows’ condition is justified as there was indicated a significant difference (P≤0.05) in the content of lactose (21. day) in favour of group F vs. L (0.56 pp). The mentioned result indicates the need of continuing the studies because lactose is a valuable, easily assimilated component of mother feed for the newborns.
