This paper, on the basis of a 5-year study (1996-2000), attempts to answer the following question: do the changes in enzymatic activity observed in an apple-tree orchard at a prolonged (20-year) application of triazine herbicides indicate the degradation processes in soil? In the soil of herbicide-triggered fallow land, the activity of the enzymes under scrutiny was subject to a significant inhibition. Among the enzymes analyzed, the activity of phosphatases was the most sensitive indicator for soil contamination with triazine herbicides. In the light of the obtained results, the criticism of the application of triazine herbicides in orchard-related cultivation is justified. It is recommended that they be replaced with other methods of weed control. However, that requires further research into the activity of enzymes for other types of soils used intensively for orchard-related purposes.
The research included a static crop-rotation field experiment set up in 1993: sugar beet – winter wheat – faba bean – winter barley + stubble intercrop and covered the effect of three soil cultivation systems: A – ploughing cultivation, B – ploughless cultivation, C – direct sowing on selected chemical properties of soil sampled from three soil profile layers: 0 – 10 cm, 10 – 20 cm and 20 – 30 cm. The ploughless soil cultivation and direct sowing increased the contents of organic C, total N and available K and decreased the content of exchangeable Mg in the upper soil layers. The content of available P and exchangeable Ca did not depend on the factors studied significantly. Giving up ploughing cultivation and taking up direct sowing increased the sum of exchangeable bases and the tendency to decrease soil pHKCl.
In the period from 1995 to 1998, tests were carried out on some physical soil properties and crop yields in rotation to determine simplified tillage systems. The investigations included traditional tillage (TT), minimum tillage (MT) and zero tillage (ZT). On the basis of the results obtained, it was found that in those years with precipitation and temperature distribution favourable to plant vegetation, the tillage simplifications MT and ZT did not bring about any decrease in maize or oat yields. The course of the weather having been unfavourable to the growth of plants (deficit of precipitation, severe winter), those plots tilled in the simplified way yielded about 20% less (winter wheat 1995/96 and 1997/98) than those under traditional cultivation. The superiority of the simplification of cultivation lay primarily, in the reduced labour required and in the organisational convenience of the running of the farms. Additionally, the simplifications applied to the tilling contributed to increased bulk density and the penetration resistance of the soil. As a consequence, water supplies deteriorated, particularly in periods with precipitation deficits. It could be argued that the simplifications analysed - when compared to traditional soil cultivation - intensified the negative effects resulting from the precipitation deficit.
This paper presents the results of studies on the influence of clear-cut site management on survival rate of 3-year-old Scots pine saplings, conducted in the Forest District Bierzwnik in September 2011. Statistical analysis showed, that only the soil cultivation method significantly influences the survival rate on the studied Scots pine plantation. No statistically significant influence of cutting residues management or combined methods of residues management and various variants of soil cultivation was found.
