Social responsibility as a means towards sustainability in timber industry. Concerns about social responsibility have become an increasingly high profile issue in many countries, industries and businesses. The forest industry is one of the most sensitive sectors paying the crucial role in global sustainable development due to its unique role in industrial development, globalization of economy and increase of social awareness about forest and timber business. The main purpose of the article is to approach theoretically the SR strategy in timber industry by taking into consideration legal and ethical, reputational and social points of view. The second - is to give a simple overview how SR is implemented by the Polish company registered in the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The website of companies registered on the Warsaw Stock Exchange is recognized as a reliable and valuable source of information due to the WSE strategy based on the principles of corporate social responsibility. As a main conclusion of the examination one may stress that although the data gathered in this article is not adequate enough the Polish timber industry does not perceive the sustainability as its major objective. The companies accept only legal requirements and standards. If they carry out socially responsible activities, it is due to a necessity to be visible and perceived as a liable organization.
In socio-economic conditions of the 21st century, return to ethics is noticed in the business world. An interest in ethical behaviour is resulting from a sudden increase of access to information, growing role of media, globalization, scandals, terrorism and the fall of large corporations such as Enron. Ethics allows business activity to grow safely in the right direction. The business sector is making attempts at formulating ethical principles. Ethics area tied to comprehensively understood quality. Quality relating to products, services, information, communication, interpersonal relationships, and in consequence ethics related to the quality of life. All quality depends on the ethicality of man, including the quality of fruits of his work. Ethical problems remain in connection with - Corporate Social Responsibility. Under CRS a business obliges to contribute to the balanced development with the help and cooperation of employees, local communities and the entiere society. The aim of CRS framework is to improve quality of life for all, which in turn leads to the development og the business sector and the entiere society. Under the conditions of sustainable development decision-makers must take into account the so-called '3E' i.e. ethics, ecology and economics. One should bear in mind R Drucker's words that ethics and morality aren't everything but without them nothing will thrive.

Subject and purpose of work: The purpose of this article is to show the results of the analysis of the involvement of micro-, small and medium-sized agribusiness enterprises operating in rural areas with reference to the issues of social responsibility in protection of natural environment. Materials and methods: Research on entrepreneurs’ views on CSR activities was conducted at the turn of 2016 and 2017 and included 212 micro (0-9 persons), small (10-49 employees) and medium (50-249 employees) agribusiness enterprises conducting business activity in the rural areas of the Wielkopolska province. Results: The conducted research has confirmed the common view that micro enterprises show little interest in implementing basic standards of social responsibility in the “environment” area. The situation is slightly better for small and medium enterprises. Conclusions: Pro-environmental activities, especially in the agribusiness sector, should be promoted, highlighting the range of benefits that can be achieved through these activities, such as improving relationships with the local community, increasing employees’ motivation, and increasing customers’ loyalty.
