Adverse early experience is generally regarded as a risk factor for both externalizing and internalizing behavioral disorders in humans. It can be modeled in rats by a post-weaning social isolation procedure. Effects of social isolation might possibly be ameliorated by environmental enrichment. In the current study, 24 male Wistar rats were divided post-weaning into four rearing conditions: control, environmental enrichment (EE), social isolation (SI) and a combination of the two experimental conditions; (EE+SI). Two observations of the effects of rearing conditions on the rate of social and object interactions were conducted during the juvenile and post-pubertal stages of development. The SI condition led to a marked increase of social interactions during the juvenile phase, but did not affect object interactions. The EE condition increased the level of social interactions during both the juvenile and post-pubertal measurements. The effects of early rearing conditions on adult exploratory behavior were less clear, with a significant difference between the groups obtained in one of three behavioral tests. Results suggest a general robustness in the development of adult exploratory behavior and anxiety when rats were exposed to early social isolation and provided brief opportunities for social play during the juvenile period. Further studies, aimed at distinguishing play-related protective factors serving against long-term adverse effects of juvenile social isolation, are suggested.
People diagnosed as mentally ill face the suffering of their own disease as well as the social stigmatization, which, in turn, can aggravate their psychopathological symptoms and exacerbate their social isolation. Mental diseases and their symptoms cause an ill person to seem recondite for the people around. She or he feels different from everybody else, thus requires special care, sensitivity, and respect from the others. A supportive and full of acceptation environment is indispensable to optimize socio-professional therapy and rehabilitation of the ill. The society should possess some knowledge of mental diseases and respect the dignity and human rights of the ill. The aim of our work was to show how the mentally ill perceive their illness as well as specify the patients’ expectations concerning their relations with the healthy people from their environment. This work consists of a theoretical part, a research which contains the results of a questionnaire, and conclusions. There were 52 patients who took part in the research. They were all aware of their illness, although the research was held during the lighter phase of the disease or its remission. The analysis of the collected data indicates that the ill perceived their disease as a burden and obstacle to fulfilling their principal aims. The disease also engendered negative emotional reactions in them and significantly impaired the quality of their life.
Objective: To evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients aroused from prolonged coma after a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) treated by physiotherapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’ programme. It was assumed that physiotherapists who acquired this knowledge and experience would create a better therapeutic milieu, and would be more effective than physiotherapists who had not received this training. Material and methods: 40 patients who had suffered a severe TBI in a motor vehicle accident and had been aroused from prolonged coma were examined. All the patients underwent long-term rehabilitation according to a standard, phased programme. They were divided into two numerically even groups: an experimental group, treated by therapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’ programme, and a control group, treated by physiotherapists who were not trained in this programme. The research instruments included an analysis of documentation, a structured clinical interview, and the Quality of Life Scale. Results: As hypothesized, the experimental group showed significant improvement in HRQOL, whereas in the control group improvement was statistically non-significant. Conclusions: The patients from the experimental group, treated by physiotherapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’, obtained a significantly greater improvement in physical and social functioning, and thus in HRQOL, than patients from the control group.
