Transferring school children to the places familiar to them, which they are attached to, is the fundamental condition for the formation of attitudes among the young generation. Appealing to the pupils' awareness of their closest surroundings is particularly important in the lessons of the geography of Poland. While accomplishing issues of the irrational use of the geographical environment resources as well as forming the environment-friendly attitude, four components are taken into consideration: knowledge, actions, emotions and beliefs. The atmospheric pollution is the question connected with a high level of knowledge, but the effectiveness of actions taken against this problem is very low. At the same time, school children's activities are aimed to ensure conservation of water and energy. This attitude is formed first of all in the pupils' families and is aimed at the lowering of the bills rather than at the actual interest in the environment. It turns out that consistent appealing to the consciousness and mental powers not always has the strongest and the most lasting influence. Yet appealing to the emotions by the prospect of an ecological catastrophe is a sufficient reason for school children to rationally use the environment. The belief about the effectiveness of their activities is also important. In the pupils' opinion, waste segregation, which is the most noticeable in houses and blocks of flats, is the most effective action. For most school children, their teacher's behaviour towards the environment is substantial in the process of attitude formation.
