New trends in package market include active and intelligent packaging that is based on a deliberate interaction of the packaging with the food and/or its direct environment to improve food quality and safety. Such technology includes advances in control of chemical, physical and biological processes. Active packaging contains e.g. carbon dioxide absorbers/ emitters, odour absorbers, while intelligent packaging includes time-temperature indicators, ripeness indicators, biosensors, etc. Until 2004 in Europe there was a legislative lack for these kind of packaging decreasing their penetration in the EU market. Regulations (EC) 1935/2004 and (EC) 450/2009 set new legal basis for their correct use, food safety and marketing.
