Comparison of Slovakia major competitors on the EU timber market

This paper analyses the use of roundwood among the SR major competitors in the EU. The analysis compared the calculated variables on production and consumption of different roundwood assortments in the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, Austria and Finland. To ensure comparability, individual index methods are applied to the volume of import on production and consumption and export consumption over the period of five years. The results show different development of roundwood utilisation in analysed countries.

Price versus non-price factors of sector competitiveness: case study of the round wood market in Poland

Sector competitiveness does not constitute a simple sum of factors identified on different levels of economic analysis. It turns out that competitiveness is determined by both measurable and non-measurable factors. A growing influence of behavioural factors inclines to undertake aggregate research attempts of a qualitative nature. The authors of this paper have made an effort to confront the price and non-price factors of competitiveness based on a specific sector of economy, i.e. the round wood market in Poland.

The index is based on monthly published data concerning the economy of Poland and the European Union. It can facilitate commercial negotiations between forest industry entrepreneurs and The State Forests which take place once every half year.

The influence of variable indexes of material prices on costs in an enterprise is a significant element affecting the position of sawmill enterprises in the domestic wood industry. Apart from the price rise factor resulting from the increasing material deficit, the qualitative and dimensional characterisation of processed round wood is also significant. The influence of these factors is particularly important for medium-size enterprises concentrating on gradual technological development in order to maintain competitiveness on the market.
