The cricetid rodents (hamsters, voles, and gerbils) show substantial inter-specific variation in their social organization, mating strategies, and patterns of social behavior, including parental care. In the present study, behaviors related to pair-bonding and parental activities were evaluated in male–female pairs of six cricetid species (Cricetulus migratorius Pallas, 1773, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, 1779, Microtus arvalis Pallas, 1778, Microtus socialis Pallas, 1773, Lasiopodomys brandti Radde, 1852, and Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards, 1867) observed under laboratory conditions. These species were chosen due to particular differences in their mating strategies and the spatial-and-ethological population structure (Types I–IV). The results of the study show that there is a pronounced tendency towards both reinforcement of pair-bonds and increasing rate of direct parental care, especially paternal one, when solitary or gregarious species (Types I and II—C. migratorius and C. rutilus) are compared with the ones living in family groups (Type III—M. arvalis and M. socialis and Type IV—L. brandti and M. unguiculatus). Parental investment of males is mainly related to additional tactile stimulation of infants. A high level of tactile stimulation of pups promotes an increase in subsequent paternal care and reinforcement of pair-bonding, and, conversely, a deficit of tactile stimulation negatively affects the development of paternal behavior and social relationships. Thus, tactile stimulation can be regarded as one of the proximate mechanisms of socialization that plays an essential role in the evolution of sociality, i.e., transition to a family-group mode of life in rodents.
The impact of burrows constructed by plateau zokors Myospalax fontanierii (Milne- -Edwards, 1867) on alpine meadow vegetation on the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) plateau was investigated. Plant samples taken from quadrats directly over active zokor burrows, back-filled burrows, adjacent burrow controls, and random sites from a field, in which no burrows or mounds occurred were compared. The biomass of plants (below- and above-ground) directly over shallow active burrows was significantly lower than on control plots. This reduction in biomass was not significantly different than that between deep active burrows and control plots. There were no significant differences between above- and below-ground plant biomass on areas perpendicular to active burrows when compared to random sites. Back-filling soil in burrows could promote the growth of above-ground monocotyledonous plants. However, the burrowing activities of zokors had a negative effect on biomass of dicotyledonous plants.
I analyze and summarize the empirical evidence supporting alternative hypotheses posed to explain the evolution of rodent group-living. Eight hypotheses are considered: two rely on net fitness benefits to individuals, five rely on ecological and life-history constraints, and one uses elements of both. I expose the logic behind each hypothesis, identify its key predictions, examine how the available evidence on rodent socioecology supports or rejects its predictions, and identify some priorities for future research. I show that empirical support for most hypotheses is meager due to a lack of relevant studies. Also, empirical support for a particular hypothesis, when it exists, comes from studies of the same species used to formulate the original hypothesis. Two exceptions are the hypothesis that individual rodents live in groups to reduce their predation risk and the hypothesis that group-living was adopted by individuals to reduce their cost of thermoregulation. Finally, most hypotheses have been examined without regard to competing hypotheses and often in a restricted taxonomic context. This is clearly an unfortunate situation given that most competing hypotheses are not mutually exclusive. I suggest that in the future comparative approaches should be used. These studies should examine simultaneously the relevance of different benefits and constraints hypothesized to explain the evolution of rodent sociality.
Seed dispersal distance is influenced by a variety of seed properties and functional responses of dispersers. However, to our knowledge, how and why seed dispersal distances are determined remains poorly understood. In the present study, seeds of sympatric tree species, Pinus koraiensis, Corylus mandshurica, Corylus heterophylla, and Quercus mongolica were released to investigate the effects of rodent abundance, seed type, and seed availability on seed dispersal. Our results showed that seeds of P. koraiensis were dispersed further than those of C. heterophylla and C. mandshurica regardless of the ambient rodent and seed abundances, reflecting a consistent effect of seed type on seed dispersal distances. Seed dispersal distance was greatly facilitated by lower per-capita seed abundance (the ratio of seeds to rodents); however, seed caching and cache survival were benefited from higher per-capita seed abundance. Although seed dispersal and seed caching of a particular tree species can be enhanced by its own seed availability, no consistent influence was detected at interspecific levels, reflecting different interspecific effects of seed availability on seed dispersal of sympatric seed species. Our results provide evidences that the effect of seed availability on seed dispersal should be evaluated in terms of per-capita seed abundance and interspecific effects, rather than the independent influence of seed or disperser abundances.
It remains unclear whether enhanced ion fluxes occur in the esophageal stratified squamous epithelium upon acid exposure. Rat esophageal tissues devoid of submucosal glands displayed basal short-circuit current (Isc) of 5.03 ± 1.93 µA/cm2 and lumen-negative potential difference (PD) in association with net absorption of Na+ and Cl-, and secretion of HCO3-. Luminal hydrochloric acid (HCl) challenge (pH = 1.6) triggered an acute rise of the Isc and increment of negative PD to seven-fold of baseline, which was diminished in HCO3--free, but not Na+- free buffer. The rise of Isc was inhibited by pretreatment with di-isothiocyanatostilbene-2, 2'-disulphonic acid (DIDS) and 5-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl)-amiloride (EIPA). Topical carbachol, capsaicin, forskolin or CFTRinh-172 had no effect on basal Isc. CFTRinh-172 did not reduce the acid-increased Isc. Functional ablation of capsaicin-sensitive nerves had no effect on the acid-induced Isc. The phenomenon of enhanced ion fluxes upon acid stimulation was confirmed in human esophageal specimens. Our results demonstrated that the mechanism of acid-induced rapid transepithelial ion fluxes is dependent on the presence of bicarbonate ions as well as functional anion transporters and Na+/H+ exchanger, but independent of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The capsaicin-sensitive and muscarinic-dependent nerve pathways did not play roles in the mechanism.
Several studies have suggested that modulation of the glutamatergic system via metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu) could be a new, efficient way to achieve antipsychotic-like effects. Such an activity was shown for mGlu2/3 and mGlu5 receptor agonists/positive modulators, as well as for ACPT-I or LSP1-2111, a non-selective mGlu group III receptors orthosteric agonists. Herein, we report the pharmacological actions of Lu AF21934 and Lu AF32615, a novel, selective and brain-penetrant positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of the mGlu4receptor with proven anxiolytic, but not antidepressant-like activity, in several tests reflecting positive, negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia in rodents. MK-801- and amphetamine-induced hyperactivities, as well as DOI-induced head twitches in mice were used as models for positive symptoms. Furthermore, the effect of Lu AF21934 on DOI-induced frequency of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) in slices from mouse brain frontal cortices was investigated. The MK-801 induced disruption of social interaction and of spatial delayed alternation in rats were used as models for negative and cognitive symptoms, respectively. Lu AF21934 (0.1, 0.5, 2 and 5 mg/kg) and Lu AF32615 (2, 5 and 10 mg/kg) dose-dependently inhibited both MK-801 and amphetamine-induced hyperactivities. Concomitantly, Lu AF 21935, an inactive enantiomer of Lu AF21934, was not effective. Moreover, the drugs antagonized DOI-induced head twitches in mice. DOI-induced increased frequency of spontaneous EPSCs was also decreased by Lu AF21395 and Lu AF32615. The MK-801-induced disruption in the social interaction test, measured as number of episodes and total time of episodes between two rats, was abolished by Lu AF21394 at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg and Lu AF32615 at a dose of 10 mg/kg. In the delayed spatial alternation test, the effective doses of Lu AF21934 were 1 and 2 mg/kg, and the AF32615 was active at a dose of 10 mg/kg. Altogether, we propose that mGlu4 receptor can be consider as promising target for the development of novel antipsychotic drugs, acting as a positive allosteric modulators of the receptor.
Various methods have been used to track seed dispersal of large-seeded species; however, the influence of different seed tracking methods on ecological outcomes of seed dispersal by animals is not well evaluated. Acorn removal by food hoarding animals and the following seedling establishment of Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) were investigated in Xiaoxing’anling Mountain, Heilongjiang, northeastern China, by using four different marking methods: plastic tagging, nail insertion, hole drilling, and isotope labeling. The acorn removal speed differed among marking methods, with plastic-tagged acorns being removed more slowly than those marked with nails, holes, and isotope. By checking the attached cotyledons and performing isotope analyses, more seedlings were found to establish from nailed acorns and isotope-soaked acorns than from drilled acorns and plastic-tagged acorns. Plastic-tagged acorns were transported closer than those marked with nails, holes, and isotope. Moreover, seedlings were often found clustered in caches containing acorns marked with plastic tags. Low level of cotyledon predation by animals makes it possible to directly identify focal seedlings of white oaks based on the attached cotyledons. Considering cotyledon predation by animals, coupling minor modification of cotyledons with isotope labeling appears to be an easy way to explore the actual pattern of seed dispersal of large-seeded trees, e.g., oaks.
Ectopic pregnancy has been described in humans and different animal species, among them in pet, farm and laboratory animals. This phenomenon is also known in rodents; in chinchilla, however, it is recognized only sporadically. In the present case a 5-year-old female chinchilla was brought to the clinic because of prolonged gestation. During clinical examination the poor health of the animal was determined, including anorexia, lethargy and apathy. An enlarged abdomen was also visible. Ultrasound examination of the abdomen revealed the spherical structure of non-homogenous echogenity with hyperechogenic areas typical for bone tissue. The X-ray examination showed a mineralized fetal skeleton. A dead fetus was identified. Ventral midline laparotomy was performed under general anesthesia using medetomidine, butorphanol and ketamine. In the abdominal cavity an encapsulated spherical mass without connection to surrounding internal organs was found. A significant volume of dense puss and a developed dead fetus were removed from the body. The uterus seemed to be intact, without visible damage. The body weight of the animal was 918 g before surgery, and 517 g afterwards. The fetus’s prenatal status was suspected. It appeared to be initially developed inside the uterus and later came out due to uterus rupture into the abdominal cavity where it was encapsulated in the following period. Seven months after the surgery the next pregnancy was diagnosed. The presented case has confirmed the possibility of ectopic pregnancy in this animal species with the ability of fertility afterwards.
