During the two subsequent experiments involving isa vedette broiler chicks the effect of delay of first feeding and watering (0, 24, 48 and 72 hours) upon body weight and yolk sacc absorption as well as on glucose, protein, triglicerides and cholesterol levels in blood plasma were investigated. It was stated that chicks body weight during the first few days of life depended on the length of starvation period. With a starvation lasting over 24 hours the body weight was decreased (even below the initial body weight). Starved chicks used more residual yolk nutrients than those obtaining compound feed stuffs, especially if they were watered. With the chicks given feed 24-72 hours later than the controls the quotient: yolk sacc absorption/body weight was higher. The delay of the first feeding also resulted in lowered levels of plasma glucose and increased levels of protein, triglicerides and cholesterol. The impact depended on both the length of starvation and on the watering of chicks.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood plasma levels of leptin, ghrelin and parameters of lipid metabolism during the peripartum period in mares. The investigation included 15 purebred Arabian broodmares 5 to 13-years-old and 6 pony mares from 9 to 16-years-of-age. The blood samples were collected two weeks before the term of anticipated foaling and on days 0, 3, 9, 15 and 22 post partum. The levels of leptin and ghrelin in the blood plasma were determined using RIA kits (Linco Research) and the concentration of triacylglycerols (TG), glycerol, free fatty acids (WKT), total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol were measured via enzymatic methods. The plasma concentration of leptin, WKT, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol attained maximum values at parturition day. Plasma TG and LDL cholesterol levels were the highest in late pregnancy and diminished in the days following parturition. The values of glycerol, WKT, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol were lower and the levels of leptin and ghrelin were higher in purebred Arabians than in pony mares. A negative correlation was found between the plasma leptin concentration and the WKT/TG ratio. Leptin can play an important role in the regulation of lipid metabolism during the periparturient period in mares.
The aim of the research was to compare selected biochemical parameters of rabbits’ blood (crossbreeds) depending on the kind of diet. Twelve rabbits at the age of 2 months and at a body weight of 1.5 kg were chosen for this experiment. The animals were divided into two research groups depending on the kind of diet they were fed. The first group consisted of rabbits fed on an all-mash diet while the second group was fed according to a typical ecological model. After 7 months of the experiment blood was collected for analysis from each animal. In the blood serum samples, the activities of the following enzymes were determined: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), as were the concentration of glucose, urea, total protein, protein fractions and the lipid proflile (total cholesterol, HDL and LDL fractions) as well as the concentration of triglycerides. This research showed statistically significant diet-dependent differences among all biochemical parameters of blood apart from HDL fractions.
During three subsequent experiments involving Isa Vedette broiler chicks, the effect of substituting corn ground for complete feed upon and yolk sack weight as well as glucose, protein, triglicerides and cholesterol levels in blood plasma were under investigation. It was stated that chick body weight during the first few days of life depended on both the nutritive value of feed and period of alterated feeding. With corn ground substituted for chick starter, the yolk sack absorption was slower and related to the period of corn feeding. In the blood plasma of chicks fed initially with corn ground, only the levels of glucose, triglicerides and cholesterol were higher, compared to those of birds given complete feed.
