From a physiological point of view, pain in sport has an informative function, indicating the maximum load capacity of the body and especially of those areas which are usually exposed to maximum loads and, consequently, damage or injury. Pain in an athlete’s body usually has a specific cause, predictable duration, and proven methods of treatment. Pain is part of the sporting experience, irrespective of whether the discipline is a contact or a non-contact sport. Interest in the problems of pain in sport has been growing in recent years, as demonstrated by the host of scientific publications referred to in the paper, and in general the number of articles and studies available in thematic databases. The problem of pain in sport will become increasingly important, not least because of the increasingly higher load on athletes in all disciplines, as shown by the successive new world records. Also, the increasing number of amateur and recreational athletes will require appropriate studies. As this group is not sufficiently prepared for the effort, it is very susceptible to injury. Pain in sport can also be expected to continue to gain in importance considering the increasing number of active elderly people, especially in European countries. The article emphasizes that better knowledge of this area may have practical applications in the training process of athletes as well as persons who are physically active during their working life and after retirement. Furthermore, pain in sport may, due to advances in biological and medical sciences, give rise to new research areas. In this paper, the main trends of scientific problems and research concerning biological aspects of pain in sport are presented.
The study included 114 clinically healthy horses representing different groups: breeding horses (27), recreation horses (22), and sport horses (65). The group of sport horses consisted of racehorses (11), trotters (15), jumping horses (25), and driving horses (14). The peripheral blood samples collected three times: before exercise, immediately after exercise, and after 30-min rest were examined for the activity of oxygen metabolism of neutrophils using chemiluminescence (CL). The study demonstrated a temporary post-exercise intensification of free radical processes in sport horses. The intensity of this reaction depended on the intensity and duration of the exercise workload, which was confirmed by the changes in the heart rate and breathing. The analysis of the results of pre-exercise examination demonstrated clearly higher CL values of neutrophils in horses trained regularly and intensively than in animals of small physical activity. This result proves a positive influence of regular training on oxygen-dependent bactericidal activity of neutrophils.
According to the Physiotherapist Act, physioprophylaxis is an important component of physiotherapy and of the physiotherapist’s professional activities. Physioprophylaxis can be oriented towards practicing healthy lifestyle behaviours, minimizing disease risk factors, or attenuating the consequences of the disease, surgery, and/or disability. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycaemia, i.e. high blood glucose levels. It is caused by the dysfunction or destruction of β cells of pancreatic islets of Langerhans, which are responsible for the production and secretion of insulin. Type 1 diabetes is most common in children and adolescents. According to the 2018 report, 6,400 children aged 0-14 years and about 180,000 people over 14 years old suffer from type 1 diabetes in Poland alone. Physical activity is an important stimulus for optimal physiological development of children and adolescents, and is an important factor in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and mortality. Physical exercise reduces the need for insulin and increases the sensitivity of cells to insulin, so that the daily dose of insulin can be reduced. The Polish Diabetes Association recommends that children with type 1 diabetes should exercise for more than one hour a day in order to reduce the risk of vascular complications associated with the disease. The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of type 1 diabetes physioprophylaxis in children in the form of physical exercise, based on previous literature. The majority of research indicates physical activity has a positive effect on physiological function in children with type 1 diabetes, specifically reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia, high blood glucose level, insulin demand, and premature death.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical exercise on limited locomotion in the hands of patients who underwent surgery to correct Dupuytren’s contracture. We studied the hands of 84 patients with Dupuytren’s contracture aged from 30 to 84 years. In all patients, the contracture was removed by performing a partial fasciectomy. Physical exercises were carried out a week prior to surgery and during the postoperative period. Patients were divided into group I, in which the exercise was carried out under the supervision of the authors of this study and group II, in which exercises were performed sporadically and without professional supervision. Measurements were performed on all patients one week before surgery (A), 1 week after surgery (B) and 6 weeks after (C). The range of movement of fingers was measured using a goniometer. The average total loss of finger extension was evaluated, taking due account of the extension loss in the MCP, PIP and DIP joints of all fingers of the treated hand. Rehabilitation treatment included active and passive exercises; in more severe cases the treatment of choice was massage and special equipment to help bear flexion contracture. Test results were statistically analyzed. In all patients, there was an increase in mobility of the fingers. Patients taking part in physical exercise had significantly greater range of finger movement.
Background. Sedentarism and Physical Activity (PA) are considered main components of people’s lifestyle and key indicators of health. Although they can be seen as opposite life conducts that reduce each other’s effects on health, no study has yet clarified the nature of their relation. However, both behaviors can be influenced by similar psychological, social, and environmental constructs. Material and methods. We selected 480 students (272 boys, 208 girls) from middle schools in the metropolitan area of Monterrey (Mexico), who filled in questionnaires on PA behaviors and social-environmental correlates through an online system. Results. Our outcomes highlighted overall low PA levels. Further, girls are more affected by their social environment, whereas physical environment barriers represent a fitting predictor of boys’ PA. Regardless of gender, PA engagement seems to be significantly determined by the level of enjoyment of sedentary behaviors. Conclusions. These results can help professionals in PA and health create gender-specific interventions targeting to raise youth’s PA levels by means of enhancing psychosocial and contextual features. Due to the lack of studies on psychological factors related to sedentary behaviors, our results could arouse attention on this issue and promote further research to better understand the processes beneath it.
