Iris species have great economic importance for their use in ornamental and pharmaceutical industry. Flora of Turkey reports about 43 local taxons of which 16 are endemic. Iris suaveolens Boiss. et Reuter is an endemic species with high seed dormancy and has high tolerance to cold and drought. This study focused on seed dormancy break of I. suaveolens under in vitro conditions. In the first experiment, the seeds were given stratification treatment on MS medium containing different concentrations of BAP with or without NAA. The 2nd experiment reports effects of alternative combinations of cold (at 4°C, 24 h dark) – warm (16 h light photoperiod) conditions on medium containing different concentrations of plant growth regulators on agar solidified MS medium. Both experiments showed about 8.33% seed germination against 64.5% seed viability as confirmed by tetrazolium test. All germinating seeds were abnormal and very weak. In the third experiment, 10 minutes acid scarified seeds cultured at 24°C in 16 h light photo period on MS medium achieved 60.0% germination. Similar treatment under cold + dark condition was inhibitory and failed to show identical results. This underlines the importance of acid scarification, photoperiod and warm treatments of I. suaveolens seeds to break seed dormancy. All germinated seeds showed normal growth and development under field conditions.
Changes in production methods of Ericaceae ornamental plants could have caused them to become more vulnerable to weak pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate the casual agent of Ericaceous plant damage. Plants and peat substrate were collected from two nurseries near Poznań. After isolation on agar medium and fulfilling Koch postulates it was found that the casual agent of Ericaceae ornamentalplant damage was Pestalotiopsis sydowiana (Bresadole) B.C. Sutton, a new species noted in Poland.

Aphid infestation of decorative perennials

The many years’ study on species composition and harmfulness of aphids infesting perennials in the decorative plant collection Agricultural University in Poznań permited to ascertain occurrence of 23 aphid species on 66 species of decoratice perennials, representing 20 botanical families. The species that occurred in all the four study seasons in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005 included: Aphis fabae Scop., Brachycaudus cardui (L.) and Aphis sedi Kalt.. Very often Aphis newtoni Theob., Acyrthosiphon malvae (Mosl.), Brachycaudus helichrysi Kalt. and Longicaudus trirhodus (Walk.) were found. Spring and early summer was the period of numerous occurrence of aphids on decorative perennials. The high degree of plant infestation was resulted in decreasing the plant’ decorative value. The aphid infestation may be especially dangerous for numerous cultivars of Dahlia x cultorum, Eryngium planum, Echinops ritro, Leucanthemum maximum, Papaver orientale, Sedum aizoon, Iris sibirica, Yucca filamentosa, Achillea ptarnica, Dicentra eximia, Doronicum orientale i Geum coccineum.
A study was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, KNUST from 8th January, 2017 to 17th March, 2017 to determine the best propagating medium for Ixora coccinea and Ficus pumila. The design was a Complete Randomized Design with four treatments replicated three times. The treatments were; topsoil only, biochar only, mixture of topsoil and biochar (1:1) and mixture of topsoil and biochar (2:1) . The study revealed that the treatment with the mixture of topsoil and biochar (2:1) was the best medium, in terms of physical and chemical properties and produced the highest number of leaves and rooted cuttings in Ficus pumila. Topsoil only had highest number of leaves and roots for Ixora coccinea. The biochar medium started rooting earlier for Ficus pumila at 2 weeks and recorded the highest number of leaves, while that of Ixora coccinea rooted at the fourth week towards the fifth week. The study concluded that mixture of topsoil and biochar (2:1) could be used for propagating difficult to root ornamental plants whiles Biochar only could also be used to propagate Ficus pumila.
