There have been no reports on how the light-dark changes determine the locomotor activity of animals in the group of high reactivity (HR) and low reactivity (LR). In the present study we have compared selected parameters of the locomotor activity of the HR and the LR groups of the laboratory opossums and Wistar rats during consecutive, light and dark phases in the open field test. Sixty male Wistar adult rats, at an average weight of 350 g each, and 24 adult Monodelphis opossums of both sexes at an average weight of 120 g each were used. The animals’ activity for 2 h daily between the hours of 17:30 and 19:30, in line with the natural light-dark cycle were recorded and then analysed using VideoTrack ver. 2.0 (Vievpoint France). According to our results, we noted that a change of the experimental conditions from light to dark involves an increase in the locomotor activity in rats and opossums of the HR group, while there is no effect on the activity of the rats and opossums in the LR group. Locomotor activity in the HR rats, both in the light and dark conditions is characterised by a consistent pattern of change — higher activity in the first stage of the recording and a slowdown (habituation) in the second phase of the observation. The locomotor activity of the opossum, during both light and dark conditions, was observed to be at a consistently high level compared to the rats. (Folia Morphol 2013; 72, 4: 300–305)
The increased cultivation of highbush blueberry in Poland has been paralleled with enhanced damage to this crop by different pests and diseases, including soft scales. We have carried out trials to assess methods for controlling soft scales of the genus Parthenolecanium in highbush blueberry grown in open fields or under a plastic tunnel, with an approach based on integrated pest management (IPM) principles. The reduction of Lecanium scale population using alternative products, with mechanical mechanisms of action, was similar to that achieved with treatments of different formulations of neonicotinyl-based pesticides; sometimes they were even more effective on protected crops. Control programs on plantations with a large population of Lecanium scales based on the application of these alternative products in spring and at harvest time and chemical compounds in autumn resulted in a very high efficacy and are considered the most suitable strategies to assure yields without residues and a reduced impact on the environment.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of presowing conditioning, hormone permeation, and fungicide application on the vigour of seeds and seedlings as well as the yield of marjoram herb collected from the cultivation started by direct sowing into the open field. The methods of presowing seed treatment were as follows: soaking in GA3, matriconditioning with solid substance MicroCel-E, osmoconditioning in the solution of polyethylene glycol PEG 6000. Seeds of every combination were either dressed with Penncozeb or sown without fungicide. The yield and quality of marjoram herb were tested in the field experiments conducted in the region of Central and Southern Poland. The phytopathological analysis of seeds showed their low infestation by microorganisms, this not increasing following the seed conditioning and soaking in GA3 solution. The measurements of seedling vigour under controlled conditions proved the positive effect of every tested method of presowing seed treatment. Irrespective of localization, the yields of marjoram herb and essential oil were the highest with the crop from matriconditioned seeds. The effect of seed osmoconditioning and soaking in GA3 solution as well as fungicide application depended on the localization of marjoram growing.
Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) may be cultivated either for white or for green spears, the latter method started to prevail in the world in the last years. The aim of the study was a comparison of yielding of white and green asparagus cv. ‘Ravel’ in the open field and in the PE tunnel. The weight, number and diameter of spears in the total, marketable and non-marketable yields in the first and second harvest year were assessed. Total and marketable yield of white asparagus was higher than that of green one, but the latter formed significantly more spears in the total and nonmarketable yield. The yield and number of spears obtained in the tunnel was significantly higher than with no cover. Marketable spears constituted on average 77.8% of yield weight and 63.0% of the total number of spears and the values for both cultivation methods were similar. Mean weight and diameter of white spears were higher than those of the green ones.

Molecular mechanism of emotional fever - the role of nitric oxide

The purpose of these studies was to assess the involvement of nNOS and iNOS inhibitors on stress fever caused by exposure to an open field in freely moving biotelemetered rats. Vinyl-L-NIO (N5 - (1-Imino-3-butenyl) - ornithine, a neural nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibitor, and aminoguanidine, an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitor, were injected into the lateral ventricle (icv) at a dose of 5 µg and 10 µg, respectively, and then immediately exposed to open field for 30 min. After exposure to the open field, rats not treated with NOS inhibitors responded with a rapid rise in Tb and it was accompanied with an increase of motor activity. Both inhibitors significantly suppressed the stress fever. vL-NIO did not influence stress-induced rise in locomotor activity as well as did not change Tb in unstressed rats. Since aminoguanidine caused a transient fall in Tb below the baseline in rats exposed or not to open field and because this inhibitor suppressed stress-induced rise in locomotor activity, we concluded that nNOS expression inside the brain is critically involved in the rise in Tb due to exposure to psychological stress.
