Article presents historical development of the science, from machine engineering to the present agricultural engineering, revealing its continuously expanding scope. In view of the above, the placement of agricultural engineering within the organization of science becomes increasingly important. Assuming that the research within this science focuses on farming objects, therefore its placement within agricultural sciences seems to be justified. However, not all issues may be classified and evaluated within agricultural sciences. The issues of machine design are related more closely to technical sciences, therefore the research directions presented herein include primarily the most pressing needs of agricultural sciences and the entire food management complex.

Paper presented the current literature review on application of computer image analysis in the field of agricultural research activities. The first part discussed some general topics connected to image analysis, the second showed obtained results to the date. Image analysis creating quite new perspectives of plant material evalulation may accelerate cultivar identification process on the basis of shape, brightness and colour of plant organs (seeds, grain or leaves). It is a very precise investigation tool which also helps in early diagnostics of damages caused by abiotic factors and pathogens. Many of described techniques may be considered as non-invasive and suitable for use in vivo experiment as well as in field and pot trials.

The article prosents an attempt to evaluate contribution of agricultural engineering to the development of science and national economy. The analysis comprised all home research centres of university agricultural branches and departmental Institute. The authors isolated 9 main scientific fields in technology by showing the place and significance of agricultural engineering in agricultural science, and their level and practicability were briefly evaluated. The paper evaluates also conditions of scientific workers, dividing them into groups and showing the attitude of socalled independent workers towards other groups.
