This paper presents a hydromorphological and landscape assessment of the Białka river valley. The study follows the Landscape and Hydromorphological Assessment of River Valleys Method (LSHM Method), which is intended for assessing and identifying areas in river valleys and there to determine their development potential. The LSHM Method distinguishes three main groups of factors: hydromorphological (H), landscape (L), and integrated (I). All these factors are assessed using a 10-point scale. In past practice, hydromorphological and landscape elements have been assessed separately. Hydromorphological methods have focused solely on the channel; while landscape methods have only assessed the area up to the watercourse boundary. Application of the LSHM Method offers more “holistic”, integrated knowledge of the river valley showing what should be improved and where. The Białka river is a mountain river and, as an effect, changes in its whole valley occur very quickly. Based on the results of the present study, the Białka river valley is characterized by a landscape of regional importance, with a very high tourism potential. It is moreover a braided river, which should be protected.
Long-term observations of Upper Vistula tributaries, made by the author, showed that the narrowing and straightening of rivers and their floodplains resulted in accelerated riverbed erosion and the increase of flood risks. River floodplains are widely acknowledged as being very important for biodiversity, therefore by their narrowing they lose their natural patterns and, as a consequence, decline in habitat and species diversity. In the last years a new approach in river management and engineering appeared: the EU Water Framework Directive constitutes an important step for more ecological river training. In consequence an increasing number of restoration projects have been initiated in the last years. In the present paper the author tried to study and check the possibilities of flood plain widening upstream of the town of Nowy Sącz situated along the Dunajec River (km: 111.900 – 107.500), where devastated lands occurred. In the urban area of Nowy Sącz the levees distance was left unchanged. For the new conditions the numerical simulation by 1D mathematical model Rubarbe was carried out. The obtained results showed a significant decrease in the flood peaks upstream of Nowy Sącz and lesser decrease in the town.
All issues related to the maintenance of mountain rivers engineering structures, especially to river banks reinforcement, are extremely important to river engineering and flood protection works. The selection of appropriate hydraulic structures depends on many factors. When designing such devices, one should take into account, among other things, the type of soil, the hydrodynamic conditions, the atmospheric phenomena and the chemical condition of the water. Examples of hydraulic structures include weirs, gabions, rip-rap, boulder ramps etc. Efficient operation thereof depends on the careful execution of those structures. In case of the rip-rap revetments, there is a number of guidelines specifying the required physical and mechanical characteristics of the crushed stone used. In the present paper we discusses the methods of river bank protection, and we present the selection of rip-rap by defining technical specifications for the size of the crushed stones, the rip-rap, and the filter bed used in this context. In particular, we focus on the quality of the filter material used for the laying of crushed stones. Filtering material is laid directly underneath the rip-rap, and its faulty selection may often lead to failure of river bank reinforcement structures. For this paper we have analysed three rip-rap revetment structures within the town of Nowy Targ. A number of granulometric measurements and rip-rap sloping gradients were carried out at each station. Two stability conditions, and one permeability condition have been tested.
The presented research performed throughout 2001 and 2002 on 4 cross sections of the Mszanka river between its 5+039 km and 5+724 km was aimed at assessing the current state of plants covering the banks of the river (a right side stream of Raba river) whose watercourse underwent regulatory works in 1974, namely a combined bars and water steps engineering was applied. It was revealed that well developed plants lining the watercourse properly protected the river banks from being washed out, despite slightly inconsistent, with regard to varieties, introduction of trees and bushes. Suitability of several varieties of trees and bushes was found high enough for the purpose of biological development in watercourses of rivers with habitat conditions similar to Mszanka river catchment area.
The aim of the paper is to present the studies on the riverbed erosion on the upper course of Raba river, located from km 81.829 to km 77.751, close to the Stróża gauging station located in km 80.600. This part of the river course is completely changed due to the Project concerning the extension of the Zakopianka road located close to the Raba river. The results of simulation of riverbed evolution before and after the Project carried out by two 1D models (RubarBE and Metoda) are analysed and discussed. The results of computation obtained by both models are verified by field observations carried out in 2001 (before the Project), and in 2009 year (after the Project). The trends of erosion and deposition correspond to the field observations for the dates before and after the Project. Another verification is possible to make for the Stróża cross-section, where observations of cross-sectional geometry and water stages have been carried out from 1900 year till now. The statistical model of riverbed erosion developed for Stróża also confirm the trends obtained there by 1D models.
Temporary freshwater rock pools, as special, small-sized and isolated habitats, provide ideal systems for studying island biogeography and ecological theories and processes. In this study, a total of 70 potholes of mountain rivers were sampled during the four seasons from November 2013 to October 2014 to assess the structure of the benthic invertebrate community and to identify the relationships between habitat characteristics and the community composition. Pothole area ranged from approximately 0.01 to 0.39 m², and pothole depth ranged from 0.03 to 0.74 m. Forty-three taxa belonging to 37 families and 16 orders were collected from the potholes. The highest numbers of benthic invertebrate taxa were observed in summer and the highest average number of taxa per pothole (8.5) was observed in autumn. The diversity was the highest in spring, and the average densities of benthic invertebrates were highest in autumn. Large potholes supported more taxa than small ones and significant relationships between richness and pothole area, richness and water volume were observed. The results of Redundancy Analysis show that the community composition of benthic invertebrates in the potholes was closely correlated with water temperature, pothole area and water depth. Our results indicate that benthic invertebrate communities in river potholes are mainly structured by water depth, pothole area and water volume. The seasonal changes are also an important factor determining the presence/absence of certain taxa.
In the northern slope of the Carpathian Mountains and in their foreland, river and stream channels have been significantly transformed by human impact. These transformations result from changing land use in river basins and direct interference with river channels (alluvia extraction, engineering infrastructure, channel straightening). Anthropogenic impacts cause signifi cant changes in the channel system patterns leading to increased impact of erosion. This mainly leads to the channelling of the fluvial system. This article reviews studies of structure and dynamics of Carpathian river channels conducted based on the methodology of collection of data on channel systems, developed in the Department of Geomorphology of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, Jagiellonian University.
Velocity fluctuations and turbulence of velocity in mountain rivers varys when the flow parameters change from free flow conditions to clogged cross-section. The first part of the paper is devoted to extending the description of turbulence intensity distribution in rough flow conditions. In the second part the effect of growth of ligneous water plants in the bed on turbulence intensity is presented.
Distribution of fish communities along the submountain river (upper Coruh River, Northeastern of Turkey) was assessed to evaluate course of the longitudinal pattern in fish species diversity. The watershed area of Coruh Basin is 21.000 km², river length 376 km and it flows into Black Sea in northeastern Turkey at average discharge of 149 m³ s⁻¹ (range: 45.2–1215 m³ s⁻¹). Fixed-site electrofishing sampling at five sites located 15–210 km from river source at 2100–950 m a.s.l (Q values ranged 5–200 m³ s⁻¹) was conducted from March 2001 to March 2002. A total of 12 species were collected. Number of species (8–10) did not differ among sites suggesting no longitudinal changes, but Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index (H`) increased downstream from 1.23 to 1.82. Two distinct fish assemblages were identified. Most abundant species were Leuciscus cephalus and Alburnoides bipunctatus. Both Oncorhynchus mykiss and Cyprinus carpio collected rarely are exotic fishes for Coruh River.
Obowiązujące w Polsce prawo wodne wprowadza wymóg waloryzacji stanu i poprawy jakości wód.
