Manufacturing costs may be reduced not only through investment in new technologies, but also as a result of the application of production control based on the lean manufacturing concept. This paper characterises objectives, stages and effects of the application of lean manufacturing. Principles of value stream mapping for the present and future state were discussed. The following principles were presented in detail: functioning of the pull system such as “supermarket”, FIFO lines, production levelling as well as rhythmical pull for the stimulation process. In the concluding remarks the stages of implementation were characterised for the new manufacturing organisation.
