This paper presents the functioning of the Training and Research Center For Renewable Energy Sources in farm and park complex in Ostoja near Szczecin. The Center is an unit of West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. A diverse activities (educational, scientific, social and commercial) that provide maintenance and further development of the Center has been described.
The genetic integrity of four accessions of the cross-pollinating species rye (Secale cereale L.) was investigated. Seeds available from the first and most recent regeneration cycles, multiplied 8, 12 (twice) or 14 times were fingerprinted using microsatellite markers. In all four accessions the allele numbers and frequencies changed after regeneration. Alleles present in the original seed sample were not detectable in the regenerated populations, whereas on the other hand, alleles were found in the recent seed sample, which were not observed in the investigated plants of the original one.
Traditional agricultural measures are still necessary for maintenance of endangered endogenous species of plants and animals in ecologically valuable habitats. Poland is one of the countries of the highest biodiversity of agricultural lands in Europe, however, the intensification of agriculture and farming resulted with regular decrease of valuable wildlife species. Abandonment of agricultural use of traditionally pastoral areas induced the encroachment of species that reduce local biodiversity. To counteract this undesirable process, several organisations re-introduce Konik polski horses into wastelands. The aim of this overview is to share the experiences of institutions which used Konik polski horses as a mean for biodiversity restoration in post-agricultural and forest areas, including expected effects, their implementation and main problems encountered. The aims, positive and negative effects are presented and discussed.
Automated control systems for technical processes in dairy farming. Monitored parameters, evaluated data and formed control and operating commands for technical processes of individual animal service are presented. Perspective directions for the development of automated control systems for technical processes of machinery milking, feeding, livestock and maintenance in dairy farming based on precision (highly accurate) technologies and technical means are substantiated.
Low copy number plasmids cannot rely on the random segregation during bacterial cell division. To be stably maintained in the population they evolved two types of mechanisms (i) partition systems (PAR) that actively separate replicated plasmid molecules to the daughter cells and (ii) toxin-andidote systems (TA) that act after cell division to kill plasmid-less cells. Our knowledge of partition systems has been based mainly on analysis of plasmids from Gram-negative bacteria. Now, numerous partition systems of plasmids from Gram-positive bacteria have also been characterized and make significant contribution to our understanding of these mechanisms.
Patients with malignancy typically exhibit abnormal dendritic cell profiles. Interstitial tumor pressure is increased 20-50mmHg over that in normal tissue. We hypothesized that elevated pressure in the tumor microenvironment may influence dendritic cell (DC) phenotype and function. Monocyte-derived immature and mature DC isolated from healthy human donors were exposed to either ambient or 40 mmHg increased pressure at 37°C for 12 hours, then assessed for expression of CD80, CD86, CD83, CD40, MHC-I and MHC-II. IL-12 production and phagocytosis of CFSE-labeled tumor lysate were assessed in parallel. Elevated pressure significantly increased expression of all co-stimulatory and MHC molecules on mature DC. Immature DC significantly increased expression of CD80, CD86, CD83 and MHC-II, but not MHC-I and CD40, versus ambient pressure controls. Pressure-treated immature DC phenotypically resembled mature DC controls, but produced low IL-12. Phenotypic maturation correlated with decreased phagocytic capacity. These results suggest increased extracellular pressure may cause aberrant DC maturation and impair tumor immunosurveillance.
