Bacterial leaf blight is one of the major diseases in rice and affects yields. Thus, various methods have been applied to protect rice from this disease. Here, we show systemic translocation of the human drug niclosamide (5-chloro-N-(2-chloro-4-nitrophenyl)- 2-hydroxybenzamide) in rice and its long-term effect on prevention of rice leaf blight. The development of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae-induced rice leaf blight was effectively inhibited in untreated systemic leaves as in niclosamide-treated leaves, although its effect gradually decreased in a time-dependent manner. Time-course examination after niclosamide treatment showed that the niclosamide level was highest after 3 h in non-treated distal leaves, suggesting fast systemic movement of niclosamide from the treated local site to untreated distal regions. Our data indicate that niclosamide controls rice leaf blight by its rapid systemic movement and that its effect is maintained for a long time.
The influence of different tillage and fertilization practices on changes in soil pH and sorptive parameters of loamy haplic Luvisol was evaluated in a long-term field experiment (established in 1994, in the locality of Dolná Malanta, at the experimental station of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra). The field experiment included two types of soil tillage (conventional tillage – CT and reduced tillage – RT) and also three treatments of fertilization (1. Co – control, 2. PR+NPK – crop residues together with added NPK fertilizers, and 3. NPK – with added NPK fertilizers). The soil was sampled from all treatment sites throughout 1994-2011. The results showed a statistically significant influence of tillage and fertilization on pH and sorptive complex of haplic Luvisol. The values of pH were higher (by 4%) in RT than in CT. The sum of basic cations (SBC), cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) and base saturation (BS) were all higher in RT, by 11%, 8% and 3% respectively, than in CT. In NPK (by 16%) and in PR+NPK (by 20%) the values of hydrolytic acidity (Ha) were decreased in comparison to the control. On the other hand, SBC was elevated. This led to the increase of CEC and BS. Conventional tillage and application of crop residues together with NPK fertilizers increased pH by 0.06 and 0.03 units per year, respectively, which means that the pH in the soil increased by14% and 8%, correspondingly, between 1994 and 2011. In CT and in PR+NPK, an increase of SBC occurred at an average rate of 3.17 and 1.93 mmol kg-1 year-1, respectively. A positive correlation between the content of soil organic carbon (TOC) and Ha (r = 0.334, P ≤ 0.01, n = 54), as well as a negative correlation between TOC and BS (r = -0.307, P ≤ 0.05, n = 54) were determined only in CT.

Fertilizer recommendations-environmental aspects

84%
The author presents the main frame of a recommendation system worked out in RISSAC in the last years. The basis of this system is a description of the main processes in the soils, i.e., water balances, soil physical and chemical processes. The author also presents some data about the environmental effects of intensive land use.
The sympathetic nervous system belongs to the essential systems participating in blood pressure (BP) regulation. Inhibitory intervention into the key point of its operation (alfa 1 adrenoceptors) in the prehypertensive period of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) might affect the development of the hypertension in later ontogenic periods. We studied the long-term effect of prazosin administration on the cardiovascular system of young Wistar rats and SHR. Four-week-old animals were used: Wistar rats, SHR, and Wistar rats and SHR receiving prazosin (10 mg/kg/day in tap water) by gavage. Blood pressure (BP) was measured weekly by the plethysmographic method. After six weeks under anaesthesia, the carotid artery was cannulated for BP registration, and the jugular vein was cannulated for administration of drugs. Afterwards, the animals were perfused with a glutaraldehyde fixative at a pressure of 120 mmHg. The septal branch of the left descending coronary artery was processed using electron microscopy. The prazosin administration evoked the following results in both groups: a decrease of BP and heart/body weight ratio, enhancement of hypotensive responses to acetylcholine (0.1 µg, 1 µg, and 10 µg), and an increase in the inner diameter of the coronary artery without changes in wall thickness, cross sectional area (CSA) (tunica intima+media), CSA of smooth muscle cells, and extracellular matrix. In the SHR group, a reduction was observed in BP increase after noradrenaline (1 µg) application. CSA of endothelial cells which was decreased in the SHR (compared to the control Wistar rats) was increased after prazosin treatment (up to control value). Long-term prazosin administration from early ontogeny partially prevented some pathological alterations in the cardiovascular system of SHR.
The study aimed at determining effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG), introduced in the perinatal period, on the reproductive system of .sexually mature female rats. ln days 2, 4, 6, 8, l0 the: newborns received s.c. injections of MSG (4 mg/g body weight) or2% NaCl solution. When the animals reached the age of 6, l2 or l8 months, their ovaries and uteri were isolated for histological and morphometric studies while in their sera estradiol level was estimated by the RIA technique. The perinatal injection of MSG was found to decrease relative weights of ovaries and uteri. In the ovaries increased numbers of primordial follicles and deceased numbers of graafian follicles were detected . Also the thickness of endometrium and of the epithelium, which lined the endometrium, were lowered in females, which received perinatal injections of MSG, as compared to the controls. Serum estradiol level in MSG injected females was lowered at the age of 12 and 18 month old females the alterations were accompanied by obesity and a decreased body length.
