The role of environmental protection in education

100%
In this report we point out the requirement of local communities for environmental education of society that results from accession of Poland to the project titled „Decade for Sustainable Development 2005-2014”. The paper includes results of the surveys carried out among students, teachers and officers of communes that reveal the role of environmental education in schools, communes and universities. The results demonstrate that environmental education should become connected with actions in aid of both natural and social local environments.
The aim of the article is to present forms of cooperation between local authorities and non-governmental organisations, taking into consideration the model of cooperation between public administration and NGOs and legal aspects. The research part of the article is based on the secondary data from “Barometr Współpracy 2009” (Cooperation Barometer 2009) report and the research results from the authors’ analysis of the selected examples of good practices of cooperation undertaken by the units of territorial self-government in the Lublin Province. The forms of cooperation and the amount of public funds devoted to the activities of the non-governmental organisations have been analysed. Moreover, the examples of cooperation realized by self-governments in the Lublin Province have been provided. The present analysis has demonstrated that the development of cross-sectoral cooperation requires more commitment from its partners. The parties should adjust the model solutions to existing possibilities and local resources. The creation of an appropriate model of cooperation between local authorities and nongovernmental organisations is a positive example of creativity, activity and development of both types of sectors, which will unquestionably be appreciated by local communities.

Materials and methods: The study methods used were literature review and data analysis. Statistics and data provided by selected institutions as well as information presented in the local media were analyzed. Results: As a result, areas and ways of creating relationships were identified, as well as differences in initiating them. With regard to the different perspectives of residents and visitors, the necessity of cooperation and communication was emphasized. Conclusions: The way of creating relations depends on the size and range of a museum. As these factors influence the intensity of discussion, smaller museums are not mentioned in the literature.

Invasive plants are one of the major treat to local communities and ecosystems in urban habitats. Aster lanceolatus Willd. is one of the most spreading invasive plant species in Serbia and to examine its impact on soil, flora and aboveground biomass in urban habitats we investigated the pH, electrical conductivity and concentration of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn) in four invaded and four uninvaded plots in urban habitats. We also studied floristic composition and floristic richness regarding these invasive plant populations. These parameters were assessed along transects arranged in the cross shape, running from the centre of the invaded area towards the peripheral uninvaded area. Trace elements were analysed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Statistical differences were analysed using ANOVA and post-hoc LSD-tests. The results showed an important decrease of the number of species and herbaceous cover under A. lanceolatus populations. There were no statistically significant differences between invaded and uninvaded patches when soil pH and electrical conductivity were considered. The concentration of Zn, Mn and Ni in the soil was higher in invaded areas. The content of Zn in aboveground biomass collected from invaded compare to uninvaded areas was higher. This study raises the possibility that invasive species changes soil characteristics and create conditions for their spreading.
Agrotourism plays a huge role in the activation of rural areas. Its position and market power affects a number of external components and mechanisms. And although its positive impact on the economic and social development rural areas is noticeable, it also reveals a number of barriers related. An important aspect is to strengthen awareness of local communities concerning benefits resulting from the development of this non-agricultural source of income. Only then it will trigger a multiplier effect that will eventually lead to reduction of unemployment, job creation in sectors serving tourists, revenue growth and will improve both living standard and working conditions of the population actively involved. Improving the visibility of rural values, processing, traditional crafts, rural buildings can become a powerful magnet for tourists, tourists looking for new unconventional forms of recreation. Benefits of the development of rural tourism can become real if there is visible involvement and close cooperation between both - service providers and local authorities (government).
Local units which include in its territory a huge part of protected areas have the opportunities for multifunctional development. The community of Smołdzino, where the biggest part of territory belongs to the Slovinski National Park and its laggings, sets an example of a community with prospects of social and economic development. The change of functioning of agricultural areas connected with existence of the state agricultural farms as well as resulting from Polish accession to the European Union were all taken into consideration. In addition, there are presented directions of activities taken up by the local community. These activities would make it possible to take on an activity which brings measurable economic profits.
Wild vegetables can contribute to people’s food security and health. In northwest Pakistan, almost 40% of the households are classified as food insecure, due to increasing population and natural and man-made catastrophes. There is an urgent need to get an overview of still existing practices of wild vegetable use and to incorporate such knowledge into agricultural policies. The present study, therefore, aims to collect and analyze information on the most widely and commonly used wild vegetables in northwest Pakistan. Semistructured interviews were performed with 126 informants (26–78-year old) from all 24 districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Information on culinary and medicinal use, cooking methods, and growing and harvest season were collected. A rating scale was used to get the opinion on quality, abundance, and use frequency of wild vegetables. Information on trading was gathered on local and regional markets. Transect walks were done with key informants for specimen collection. A total of 25 wild vegetable species (21 genera, 13 families) were documented. Most of them are herbs (22 spp.). One third of the species needs processing or detoxification prior to cooking. Taste and food quality as perceived by the local people are the main driver for use frequency and commercialization. Length of availability varies from 2 to 7 months with Rumex dentatus and Vicia faba also available during the winter season. Overall, 21 spp. are also used medicinally, mainly for gastrointestinal diseases. Leaves are the preferred plant part for both vegetables and medicines. Nine species are sold in markets, Bauhinia variegata and Caralluma tuberculata throughout the whole province. Local communities in northwest Pakistan have a broad knowledge of local plant use, especially on wild vegetables and their adequate processing. The present study suggests that the most commonly used wild vegetables should be promoted to reinforce food safety and most of them may also be commercialized. Conservation priority has to be given to the commercially harvested Caralluma tuberculata, which is presently overexploited.
