The pinealocytes of the pineal gland of children and adults were studied at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pinealocytes were classified into light and dark pinealocytes on the basis of their shape, nuclear infolding, cytoplasmic contents and staining density. The light pinealocytes outnumber the dark pinealocytes and both of them have thin processes. The light pinealocytes have round or oval cell bodies and nuclei and have vesicles and ribbons. The dark pinealocytes showed more variations in their shape. The nuclear membrane of the dark cells showed numerous infoldings with deep invagination of parts of the cytoplasm within the nuclear folds, giving the appearance of nuclear pellets. The dark pinealocytes contain pigment in their cytoplasm. In addition to the light and dark pinealocytes a very small cell type with an extremely thin and elongated cell body and nucleus was found. The cells of this type were almost always associated with vacuoles filled with flocculent material and accumulations of presumptive secretion in the extracellular compartment. The findings of this study were discussed in the light of the published data about the pinealocytes of human and non-human species.
There are no papers examining the labellar micromorphology in Malaxidinae in detail. The aim of this paper is to present the results of labellar micromorphology of our studies on Malaxidinae. The micromorphology of nine species was examined and described (calli, nectaries, OP structures, concavities). These species are divided into six groups of which the lip morphology probably represents different forms of attracting and rewarding pollinators. Group one consists of Disticholiparis gregaria and Platystyliparis aurita with characteristic globular nectary and pad-like callus. The second group with Liparis nervosa has two conelike convexities. The third one is represented by Liparis sutupensis with spread lip, the basal callus, and the epichile often eroding with age. The fourth group (Stichorkis cespitosum) has a massive hypochil with basal callus and delicate epichil. The fifth group (Microstylis ophioglossoides, Dienia ophrydis) is characterized by a lip with developed lateral lobes, three deep concavities in the middle part, an erect callus, and many raphide cells.Crepidium cf. rheedii and Crepidium dryadum from the sixth group have a three-lobed lip with entire or toothed mid-lobe, basal callus, cavity surrounded by a rim and OP structures with raphide cells. We also emphasized the different way and place of nectar secretion in the subtribe and gave some suggestions about pollination strategies.
The studies were performed on the mucosa of the body of the gallbladder in the dog and Chinese raccoon dog, species belonging to the Canidae family. The mucosal glands in both species mostly have the form of alveolar or short tubular secretory units without excretory ducts and are situated in the middle part at the bottom of the crypts surrounded by folds of the mucosa. Sporadically we observed the mucous intraepithelial glands. The results of the light and scanning electron microscopic observations indicate interspecies differences in the density, type and size of secretory units and also their openings. In the raccoon dog the number of secretory units is 30 times greater than in the dog and the units are predominantly simple glands with small openings. In the dog mostly 2 or 3 secretory units with common wide openings were observed. The SEM images of the NaOH macerated mucosa of the gallbladders showed a connective tissue framework around the glands composed of flat lamina with an irregular pattern of fine collagen fibres and numerous fenestrations. The collagen network around the openings of the glands is more compact and provides mechanical support for the glands of the gallbladder.
