Exploitation of coal deposits requires draining mine underground water to the surface level. Waters with high salt concentrations are mostly discharged to the Vistula and Odra River basins, thus considerably contaminating water resources. If protective measures are not taken, this situation may lead to an ecological disaster. The author presents causes of the threat and its significance, methods of utilization of saline water and practical ways to protect the rivers.
The Turoszów area is considered to be an environmentally disturbed area. Open pit lignite mining has contributed much of it. The Turoszów energy industry remains essential to the economy of Poland. The author provides basic data on the Turów mine, discusses geological conditions, environmental impact, protection measures and mine's plans for future.
In the Low Silesia region coal, ores, and rock materials have been exploited for several hundred years. Only some few still exist. The old underground and open brown coal mines are discussed. During the modern development of the surface in the regions of these mines the influence of the old not fully closed down excavations on the statics of the new buildings should be taken into consideration. Therefore one should refer to historical documentation.
Very high volumes of sewages and waters with a high degree of mineralization are disposed to the surface waters by the sulfuric industry. Rivers in the neighbourhood of the Tarnobrzeg Sulfuric Basin have waters which can be placed in none of the accepted classes, of purity. Also the underground waters have undergone high pollution which causes that the life conditions become worse. The sulfuric basin contributes also to the poisoning of the Vistula River waters. In the article a detailed characteristics of the water quality of the rivers in the sulfuric basin is presented.
Zawiercie region has four deposits of zinc and lead ores of 16,7 km² total area. They are situated at depths ranging from several metres to several hundred metres. If a decision is taken to start mining of these resources it will bring about a serious ecological controversy since large parts of region remain within borders of Jurassic Landscape Parks complex. Current ecological status and projections of environmental disturbances in Zawiercie region are discussed particularly with respect to environmental pollution and water cycle changes (drainage of soils).
