The symbioses of legumes and nitrogenous bacteria as well as the symbiosis of trees and mushrooms are well known. The symbiosis of Zygomycetes and photosynthesizing plants, called arbuscular mycorrhiza, is very widespread. The mycelium spreads in the soil and provides the plant with water and minerals. It helps to condition the soil and strengthens the plant. Soil pollution causes soil degradation and its regeneration requires réintroduction of fungus. This requires scientific and industrial effort. The European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) brought in huge contribution into this effort. The article treats about all aspects of soil regeneration, e.g. re-introduction of fungus into arable soil, greenhouse farms and waste dumps.
