Aphid infestation of decorative perennials

86%
The many years’ study on species composition and harmfulness of aphids infesting perennials in the decorative plant collection Agricultural University in Poznań permited to ascertain occurrence of 23 aphid species on 66 species of decoratice perennials, representing 20 botanical families. The species that occurred in all the four study seasons in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005 included: Aphis fabae Scop., Brachycaudus cardui (L.) and Aphis sedi Kalt.. Very often Aphis newtoni Theob., Acyrthosiphon malvae (Mosl.), Brachycaudus helichrysi Kalt. and Longicaudus trirhodus (Walk.) were found. Spring and early summer was the period of numerous occurrence of aphids on decorative perennials. The high degree of plant infestation was resulted in decreasing the plant’ decorative value. The aphid infestation may be especially dangerous for numerous cultivars of Dahlia x cultorum, Eryngium planum, Echinops ritro, Leucanthemum maximum, Papaver orientale, Sedum aizoon, Iris sibirica, Yucca filamentosa, Achillea ptarnica, Dicentra eximia, Doronicum orientale i Geum coccineum.
Diatomaceous earth in the prevention of worm infestation in purebred pigeons. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of diatomaceous earth in the prevention of worm infestation in purebred pigeons and forms of its application. Diatomaceous earth (diatomite) was given to pigeons in the province of Mazovia. The following pigeon breeds were used in the experiment: Warsaw butterfly, Berlin white tail, starling and Polish owl. An addition of the natural mineral at 2% of the daily dose of feed was given for three weeks in nine dovecotes. The pigeons were divided into two groups. The Group I comprised 150 birds in five dovecotes. These birds were given grain (feed mix for pigeons, made by Kampol) plus diatomite mixed with a mineral additive (mineral complementary feed, made by Biowet). Group II comprised 150 birds in the other five dovecotes. These birds were given grain (feed mix for pigeons, made by Kampol) mixed with diatomite. The experiment found that the number of parasite eggs in the group I was reduced after a week following the application of diatomite, whereas the number of Capillaria nematode eggs and the proportion of Eimeria coccidia oocysts decreased considerably in group II.
Tumor-associated immune system cells secrete protease and cytokines that can inhibit the immune response. In particular, T-cell effector functions could be inhibited, potentially causing an increase in parasitic infestations. Demodex species are common inhabitants of normal hair follicles. Humans are the specific host for two species Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and infestation of D. folliculorum and D. brevis in patients with cancer. In the present study, 101 patients with cancer were selected from among patients who were diagnosed and treated for cancer. The cancer patients were divided into four groups according to cancer type. Slides were examined for parasites using light microscopy at magnifications of ×40 and ×100. Infestation was defined as having at least five living parasites/cm2 of skin. The ages of the patients with cancer ranged between 38 and 82 years, with a mean of 65.5±10.1 years. It was determined that 77 of the 101 (76.2%) cancer patients were positive for Demodex species. Infestation was positive in 18 (47.4%) of the 38 cases in the breast cancer group, 7 (29.2%) of the 24 cases in the lung cancer group, 5 (18.5%) of the 27 cases in the gastrointestinal system cancer group, and 2 (16.7%) of the 12 cases in the urogenital system cancer group. Results showed that the rate of Demodex species infestation was higher in patients with breast cancer. Thus, cancer — and particularly breast cancer — is a risk factor for Demodex species infestation.
The present study investigated the efficacy of topical selamectin for elimination of naturally acquired Trichosomoides crassicauda infection in rats. Twelve T. crassicauda-positive rats were assigned to the treatment group and six rats were assigned to the control group. Selamectin (6 mg/kg) was applied topically to the skin in a single spot at the base of the neck in front of the scapulae in the treatment group. To assess the efficacy of the treatment, animal faeces were investigated with the use of the flotation technique on days 0, 4, 14 and 24 after selamectin application. The rats of the treatment and control groups were necropsied on the day 24. In the treatment group, 7 of 12 infected rats were cured completely. Topical selamectin was found to be effective in eliminating T. crassicauda infection in rats.
This study investigated insect pest infestation of maize, millet, sorghum, rice and wheat grains traded in the three main markets namely Monday, Baga-Road and Custom-Park markets in Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria. Sampling lasted from January to June 2012. Samples per grain type, each weighing one kilogram, were obtained every two weeks from ten randomly selected traders per market. Each sample was sieved in the laboratory to recover all adult insects present, both at sampling and also after one month stay (laid out in a completely randomized design). In each market, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) followed by Tribolium castaneum Herbst, Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus), Trogoderma granarium (Everts) or Cryptolestes sp. were the insect pests commonly found attacking more (between two to five) grain types. Observed highest and lowest mean insect numbers were respectively by S. zeamais in maize grains (12.13 individuals in Monday market) and T. granarium in wheat grains (0.13 individuals in Baga-Road market). Results unveil that among three markets, higher mean total numbers of insects were present in maize, rice or wheat (18-33). For all grain types, the mean numbers of damaged grains were significantly higher in Monday (53-357) and Custom-Park (46-302) than in Baga-Road (17-109) markets. Furthermore, the mean total number of damaged grains across markets was significantly higher maize, followed by rice and wheat (55-231) than in other grain types (37-41). The implications of all these results on insect infestation of different cereal grain types sold in these markets are discussed.
