Satellite tracking is an invaluable tool in the study of bird movements. However, the normally small sample size it involves makes it difficult to obtain data spanning the entire range of migratory behaviour found in particular populations. We recently reported that Spanish immature Short-toed Snake Eagles leave their winter quarters in sub- Saharan Africa to occupy summering areas in northern Africa (north of the Sahara), in contrast to previously reported behaviour of a young French eagle which remained during the summer in the sub-Saharan wintering range. A more recent increase in the sample size of tracked young snake eagles further extends our knowledge of the summering behaviour of this species with one immature reaching the European range but occupying four widely-separated areas during the course of the summer. In the short-term, technology progress may provide the normal use of representative samples to increase accuracy in movement ecology studies.
Metabolic activity of boar spermatozoa, liquid stored for three days at 5℃, was measured using bioluminescence for ATP content, fluorescent assay (JC fluorochrome) of mitochondrial activity and oxygen consumption. Sperm motility and plasma membrane integrity (PMI) were simultaneously analyzed. Apart from the statistically significant effect (P < 0.001) of semen storage time, the importance of the individual source of the ejaculate for the analyzed parameters of metabolic efficiency of spermatozoa was shown. This phenomenon was manifested in the interaction of the individual source of the ejaculate with spermatozoa motility, integrity of their membranes and metabolic activity with the passing time of semen preservation. Recorded results indicate that the individual factor may have a significant influence on the technological usefulness of boar spermatozoa for liquid storage. Quality analyses conducted on boar semen stored at 5℃ may be used for pre-selection of boars producing sperm with an enhanced tolerance to cold shock.
Daily movements during winter of 2 adult male (Nos 1 and 3) and 2 adult female (Nos 2 and 4) radiotracking hares Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778 were estimated from simultaneous bearings using a 50 x 50 m grid. As deduced every 4 h both from the average rate of recorded changes of squares on the grid, and from the average distance travelled, we found that the hares had a typically nocturnal locomotor activity pattern. However, when comparing individual data, we found that significant variations occurred from 12.00 to 15.59, and between 00.00 and 07.59. We also estimated that the average daily activity of the hares started near sunset (mean = 23 min after sunset, range + 110 min), and ended near sunrise (mean = 14 min before sunrise, range ± 60 min), male No 1 usually spending more time in activity than the 3 other specimens, Finally, we assessed the differences in nocturnal distance travelled between individuals (Nos 2, 3, and 4) for a given period (during week 6, mean = 3.91 km, range 6.02-2.62), and also during several nights (during weeks 6, 8, 10 and 12) for male No 3. We concluded that some inter- and intra-individual variations of activity patterns occurred on various time scales (day-to-day or during a given night), such differences probably contributing to confuse predators.
