The aim of the work was to compare selected nonspecific immunological parameters in silver and polar foxes. It was found that out of three mitogens (Con A, La and PWM) only Con A stimulated the strongest lymphocyte proliferation in both species of foxes. Mean stimulation indices and the absolute values of incorporated thymidine were significantly higher in polar foxes. The average percentages of phagocytes and the fatal indices of neutrophils were comparable in both species of foxes, while the mean value of the phagocyte index was much higher in the silver fox. However, in polar foxes a higher concentration of lysozyme in the blood serum was found. The differences in the parameters may influence the susceptibility of these foxes to some infections already at the level of nonspecific primary response.

Ovariohysterectomy is the treatment of choice for pyometra and a common contraceptive method for bitches. The effectiveness of preventing the postoperative complications depends largely on the proper monitoring of the health condition of bitches. The non-specific immunity parameters in the postoperative period are evaluated using the NBT test as well as determining the phagocytic index, percentage of phagocytizing cells, lysozyme activity, serum levels of total protein and its globulin fraction. Our study shows that the values of selected parameters of non-specific immunity provide valuable information concerning the end of inflammatory reaction caused by the discontinuity of tissues in the normal postoperative course. Moreover, the data obtained indicate that such parameters may be used in routine diagnostic procedures of early postoperative complications.

The study was performed on 28 calves, aged 2-8 weeks, divided into 4 equal groups. The calves of the group I were given 500 mg of Zn in a water solution of ZnCh orally, once a day, for 4 weeks; calves of group II - the same dose of Zn and 2500 mg of Mg in a water solution of MgCl2 x 6H2O; calves of group III - only 2500 mg Mg (MgCl2 x 6H2O). The animals of group IV served as controls. The following parameters were assayed: the number of leukocytes, leukogram, percentage of phagocytic leukocytes, phagocytic index, and the enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase in sera. The administration of Zn and Mg for 4 weeks had a positive effect on the increase profitably of the percentage of phagocytic leukocytes and the value of phagocytic index in the blood of the calves. In contrast, Mg substantially stimulated the enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase in sera.

The objective of the studies was to determine the dynamics of certain parameters of nonspecific cellular and humoral immunity in piglets in the post-natal period. The parameters of immune responses were determined in blood samples of 7 randomly chosen piglets before feeding them their first doses of colostrum, 48 h after colostrum feeding and at the age of 7, 14, 21 and 35 days of life. The following parameters were examined: the NBT, phagocytic index, test of intracellular killing, level of total protein and γ-globulin complex, lysozyme activity and IgG concentration. It was found that the nonspecific mechanisms of cellular and humoral immunity increased along with the age of piglets. Moreover, the serum IgG level diminished quickly from 30 g/l at the age of 48 h to 3,7 g/l at the age 35 days. The results of examination indicate that piglets are the most sensitive to diseases between their first 14 to 35 days of life.
