Contemporary anatomical studies require reliable methods for determining foetal age. Menstrual age is often found to be inadequate. A combination of several anatomical features showing age-dependency may result both in exact age approximation and pathology detection. The authors compared the manual foot length measurements with the ultrasound femur and humerus length measurements of aborted foetuses in the calculation of foetal age. The correlation between femur length and foot length as well as humerus length and foot length were statistically significant. The expected value formulae for foot length are presented. The authors conclude that foetal age assessment based on foot length metering is reliable before the 7th calendar month of pregnancy and correlates with ultrasound measurements of the humerus and femur.

The length of the humerus was measured in 69 staged human embryos at developmental stages 18–23 (7 and 8 weeks). It was found that the length of the humerus increases from 2.0 mm at stage 18 to 5.4 mm at stage 23. There were slight variations at certain of the stages investigated. Asymmetry between limb lengths was not found during the embryonic period under examination.

Four humeri, two from the locality of Podlesice (early Pliocene, early Ruscinian MN 14) and two from Węże 1 A (Pliocene, Ruscinian MN 15) are the basis for description of a new species of Parascalops fossilis sp. n. In Węże 2 (Pliocene, Ruscinian-Villanyian MN 15/16) one M1 and one humerus of Neurotrichus minor sp. n. was found. Many remains of Condylura kowalskii Skoczeń, 1976, come from the same locality as well. A single humerus of Neurotrichus polonicus Skoczeń, 1980, has been found in Kielniki 3 B (late Villanyian MN 17). All the above mentioned Talpidae species belong to the recent North American endemic genera and appeared as single species exclusively. The problem of probable migration or development of convergent lines is discussed.
