This work presents some properties of Sunn-hemp mosaic tobamovirus (SHMV) orginally isolated from bean plants. Virus infected host range and induced symptoms that were typical for SHMV. Following plant species distinquished SHMV from tobacco mosaic tobamovirus (TMV): Phaseolus vulgaris, Pisum sativum, Lupinus albus and Lycopersicon esculentum. In immunoblotting the serum against SHMV did not react with TMV and Tomato mosaic tobamovirus (ToMV). The electrophoretical patterns of whole virions and capsid proteins were characteristic for SHMV and different from that of TMV and ToMV.
Pseudogilquinia pillersi (Southwell, 1929), a poorly known species of trypanorhynch, is redescribed from plerocerci collected from Epinephelus coioides (Hamilton, 1922), Epinephelus malabaricus (Bloch et Schneider, 1801) (Serranidae) and Plectropomus laevis (Lacépède, 1801) (Serranidae) off New Caledonia. These were compared with specimens from Lethrinus atkinsoni Seale, 1910 and Lethrinus miniatus (Forster, 1801) (Lethrinidae) off the north-east coast of Australia as well as syntypes from Protonibea diacantha (Lacépède, 1802) from Sri Lanka. Although size differences were found in parts of the scolex as well as in the sizes of the tentacular hooks, the hook arrangements were identical in all specimens. The differences observed were attributed provisionally to intra-specific variation across a wide geographic and host range.
The mite Spatulaphorus gorganica Rahiminejad et Hajiqanbar sp. nov. (Acari: Heterostigmatina: Pygmephoridae) collected under elytra of the host beetle, Geotrupes spiniger (Marsham, 1802) (Col.: Geotrupidae) is described and illustrated from Oak forests of Golestan province, North of Iran. Moreover, host range of the genus is reviewed and a key to world species of the genus Spatulaphorus is provided.
Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) has the potential to cause serious tomato disease. Several isolates of PepMV were collected beetween 2003–2010 in the Department of Virology and Bacteriology, Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute, Poznań, Poland. The isolates were obtained from greenhouse tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) collected from different regions of Poland. Clear biological and genetic differences were detected among the Polish PepMV isolates. Since the latter induced a wide range of symptoms on tested plant species, five different pathotypes were distinguished. Sequence analysis showed that the Polish PepMV isolates share a very high sequence identity with those representing European and Chilean 2 genotype. The analysis of the genetic diversity of the Polish PepMV CH2 isolates suggested that each of them exists as a genetically diverse collection of variants called a quasispecies.
Open reading frame 76 of Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV), designated as Bm76, is a gene whose function is completely unknown. With EGFP fused to the 3' terminal of Bm76 as the reporter gene and BmNPV bacmid as the expression vector, a recombinant bacmid was successfully constructed expressing Bm76-EGFP fusion protein under the control of polyhedrin promoter in Bombyx mori cells (Bm cells), BmNPV's permissive cell line, laying the foundation for rescue experiment of Bm76 deletion mutant. Moreover, the supernatant from Bm cells transfected with the recombinant bacmid was used to infect Trichoplusia Ni cells (Tn cells), BmNPV's non-permissive cell line. Unexpectedly, the expression of Bm76-EGFP fusion protein in some Tn cells was detected, implying that viral DNA was replicated in these cells. The causes are being studied for the inability of BmNPV to produce enough viable budded viruses in Tn cells despite of viral DNA replication.
