Strong bee colonies rear more brood and produce more honey than weak colonies. The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between the strength of bee colonies, the amount of brood reared, and the amount of honey produced. Thirty bee colonies of different strength were observed. The amount of brood reared in each colony was determined one month before the beginning of the nectar flow from winter rape and the production of honey after the nectar flow period. A significant positive correlation was established between the strength of the bee colony and brood amount (r = 0.442), between colony strength and honey production (r = 0.456), and between brood amount and honey production (r = 0.568).
The aim of this study was to learn the strength of floral fidelity of honeybee colonies and to find what is the relationship between this trait and the amount of collected pollen. The observations were carried out in 2003 and 2004 on 10 honeybee colonies. The pollen was gathered from pollen loads collected using a pollen trap with a 5-mm screen mesh. A scanning electron microscope was used to view pollen grains in order to determine the number of plant species visited by the bees. The mean values of floral fidelity estimated individually for each experimental colony ranged from 40.1 to 75.7% in the first year, and from 45.1 to 67.3% in the second year of the studies. Correlation between floral fidelity and the quantity of collected pollen was observed in 60% of the colonies in the first year and in 70% in the second year. Recurrence of this relationship over the period of two years was found in only 30% of the studied honeybee colonies.
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the diet supplements BeeTonic, Beeodine and Immunbee solution on the quality of honeybee colonies in the spring. The administration of dough containing Beeodine to bees may have had a positive effect on their vitality, thanks to which they occupied the largest space in the nest (4.1 inter-comb spacer, on average) on April 15, and in late April the occupied space in this group increased almost 2.5 times. The observed colonies had a similar number of cells with brood at the 1st and 2nd measurements. They also showed a similar growth of brood. The colonies given cake with Beeodine were characterized by the highest unit productivity (4.6 kg). Similarly, the production of brood, bees and wax was stimulated by the addition of Immunbee solution (4.3 kg), whereas BeeTonic did not produce such an effect.
