The aim of this work was to evaluate the histopathological changes in dog adrenals with a special attention to cortical-cell lipidosis. The routine histopathological examinations were performed in adrenals, which were obtained post mortem from 50 dogs of both sexes, 1-22 years old. The research revealed the presence of lipidosis in the cells of zona reticulosa, and/or proliferation of cortical cells. The type of proliferation was variable, from simple hyperplasia related to hyperstimulation of the secretion of cortical cells up to benign or malignant neoplasms. A special attention was paid to the lipidosis of cortex cells. This type of degenerative changes results from disturbances in the cell lipid metabolism. The affected cells were observed in dogs older than 1 year, and their number increased with the animal’s age. Lipidosis alone was found in 8% cases, in 16% cases it was combined with hyperplasia of cortex cells, and in 30% cases it was accompanied by a neoplastic growth. Pathological accumulation of cytoplasmic lipids may result from metabolic disturbances due to the exposure to various toxic substances. The pathologic process may lead to the necrobiosis of cell nuclei. In the adrenals examined, lipidosis affected the cells in zona reticularis. Lipidosis did not appear to be related to the sex of the dogs, but the degeneration tended to increase in older dogs. It must be stressed, however, that in about half the cases examined (36%) lipidosis was not observed in adrenals with hyperplastic or neoplastic changes.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. Ultraviolet exposure and decreased DNA repair capacity are known risk factors for the development of basal cell carcinoma. However, while sunlight is critical in basal cell carcinoma pathogenesis, the relationship between exposure and tumor site and histology is unclear. Basalioma occurs in middle-aged humans, dogs and cats with no sex predilection. The tumors occur most commonly on the head, neck, and thorax. Three major histopathologic variants of basal cell carcinoma are solid, keratinizing (basosquamos), cystic, ribbon and medusoid. Generally, basal cell tumors are benign, but rare reports of metastasis exist. The prognosis is fair to good.
The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence and localization of different types of gastrointestinal tumors in dogs and cats in relation to sex, age and breed of the animals. The study was performed on tissue specimens of gastric, intestinal, salivary gland, liver and pancreas obtained during surgery from dogs and cats submitted to the Division of Pathological Anatomy, Department of Clinical Sciences at the Agricultural University of Warsaw from 1996 to 2006. During this period 73 canine tumors and 14 feline tumors were recognized. In cats most tumors (92.8 % of the cases) were malignant, the most common were adenocarcinomas, rarely sarcomas and lymphomas. The tumors were localized mainly in the small intestine, liver and pancreas, large bowel tumors were not observed. The median age of affected cats was slightly more than 9 years, most of animals were male. Gastric and intestinal tumors in dogs were recorded in animals from 9 months to 14-years-of-age, more common in males. The tumors were most commonly derived from the large intestine, especially from the rectum; however the median age of dogs with lesions was lower than in animals in which neoplasms were present in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Of interest was the phenomenon that liver tumors, especially hemangiosarcoma, were often recognized in German shepherd dogs.

The results of autopsy finding, histopathological and virological examinations of 44 spontaneously aborted fetuses of breed mares are described. In cultures of rabbit kidney cells (RK-13) from the specimens of the spleen, liver and lungs of 18 fetuses Equine arteritis virus (EAV) was isolated. In 11 cases subictericus cases, transudation in body cavities, haemorrhages in serous membranes and haemostasis in mesenteric vessels was observed. Histopathological examinations of the fetuses revealed atrophy of lymphatic tissue in the spleen and mesenterial lymph nodes. Changes characteristic of EVA were seen in arterioles of muscular type of 6 fetuses but they were poorly pronounced. Some cells of tunica adventitia were congested and hyaline changes and disintegratio of mediacites of tunica intima was also visible. Small inflammatory infiltrations in the arterioles were observed only in two examined fetuses.
