The investigations of structure of the genets and populations of Iris sibirica L. were carried out in the period 1999–2002. The studies were conducted in Molinietum caeruleae patches localized in Southern Poland. The patch labelled MW (“more wet”) measured 5,600 m² and was chracterised by presence of large depressions filled with stagnant water, concentrated chiefly in the central part of the site. In this locality species with a high competitive potential (like Phagmites australis Trin., Chamanerion angustifolium (L.) Scop., Epilobium hirsutum L., Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. and others) prevailed. The patch called LW (“less wet”) measured 1,800 m² and was characterised by small number of depressions scattered throughout the site. In this locality dominated the plants of minor competitive abilities (like Lathyrus pratensis L., Lotus corniculatus L. and others). The spatial pattern of populations was described on the basis of the locations of all ramet clusters in 100 m² square plots. Each ramet cluster was attributed to a developmental stage. The differences in height of ramets between stages was estimated on the basis of lenght of the tallest leaf and generative shoot measured in all genets and ramet clusters in both populations (30 leaves and all generative shoots in 5 clusters of ramet at generative and senile stages and 4 – at fragmentation phase in both populations). In study year 2000 Iris sibirica population in LW locality was consisted of 26 ramet clusters and showed an aggregation structure, while population growing in MW site was consisted of 502 ramet clusters and presented the group-aggregation spatial structure constituted by groups of dozen or so ramet clusters, forming large aggregations. Both populations showed signs of senility in effect of absence of genets in prereproductive stages. In 2001 and 2002 the seedlings and juvenile genets appeared only in artificially made gaps. The genets in initial stage are much lower (about 40 %) than older ones and the ramet in MW locality reached greather height (6 to 23%) than in LW site. The evaluation of structure of populations taken as indicator of their vitality, show that the population from less wet locality was in better condition despite of low abundance. Domination of ramet cluster at generative stage and vicinity of plants with low competitive potential enables longer existence of Iris sibirica in occupied site. In more wet locality the I. sibirica population is worse equiped to survive. Advanced senility and the vicinity of plants with high competitive potential might inhibit the proliferation of I. sibirica ramet clusters, accelerate their fragmentation or even eliminate from occupied site.
Two hundred species of vascular plants were identified in grasslands on the Popielno Peninsula, in the part used for agricultural purposes. Species diversity in plant communities, measured by the Shannon-Wiener index, was found to depend on soil type, land use type and phytosociological affiliation. Greater species diversity was observed in communities that developed on mineral soils, are used as pastures, and belong to the class Molinio-Arrhenetheretea. The biodiversity of grassland communities on the Popielno Peninsula is affected by habitat conditions. The relationship between vegetation biodiversity and habitat quality is difficult to grasp due to its multidimensional character. The methods of multivariate statistics may prove useful in this respect.
Changes in the floristic composition of meadows and pastures may provide information on the human impact on the habitat conditions and intensity of land use. The aim of the study was to present the floristic diversity of the Lolio-Cynosuretum association and its relation with the habitat conditions evaluated using the phytoindication method with Ellenberg indicators. The study was conducted in five river valleys in the years 1999-2012. For the analysis, 100 relevés were selected, which were subject to floristic, habitat (phytoindication), and statistical analysis. In the Lolio-Cynosuretum phytocoenoses, the total number of 178 taxa of vascular plants from 33 families was recorded. It was demonstrated that the differentiation in the floristic composition of Lolio- -Cynosuretum phytocoenoses remains in relation with the habitat conditions, which may be evaluated basing on the ecological preferences of plant species that form the taxa. The species were established as differential for the lower units, that is four subassociations and eight variants.
Fungi occur in almost all types of waters in the world and play an important role in many processes in the environment, particularly in organic matter decomposition. During the last several decades, extensive knowledge was obtained on the ecology of aquatic fungi, but on fungal biomass in the water column less. The study was aimed at simultaneous determination of seasonal and spatial variability of aquatic fungi biomass in the river waters in relation to selected physicochemical water parameters and trophic state in the 27 lowland rivers of north-eastern Poland with length between 17 and 308 km and mean annual discharge 1 – 100 m³ s⁻¹. The chemical and mycological evaluation was provided on the basis of 64 water samples taken in the July and October 2010. The chromatographic method of determination of seston ergosterol as a specific organic compound typical for the majority of fungi, was applied. Fungi biomass was higher in summer than in autumn. The particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations had no effect on fungal biomass in the studied river, as well as forest cover of the catchment and river discharge. Statistically significant correlations of fungal biomass in the river water with concentrations of ammonium (N–NH₄⁺), Kjeldahl (NKjel), total organic (TON) and total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved (DP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) were found. The principal component analysis indicates relations between (TIN) and phosphorus (SRP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) and freshwater fungi, specially in summer when aquatic fungi are able to modify the structure of the nutrients contained in the water column.
Ostericum palustre Besser is a species protected by the domestic and EU laws. In Poland it occurs in about 150 sites one of which is located in the area covered by Natura 2000 “Lisi Kąt”. The population existing there, estimated as 35,000 individuals, covers the acreage of 342 ha. The species persists there mostly in over-dried and transformed-by-meadow-management reed beds with the share of Carex acutiformis and C. gracilis, in phytocenoses of Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae with a large share of mosses, in overgrowing patches of the alliances of Molinion as well as sporadically within reed beds with Carex pseudocyperus. Its share in similar phytocenoses coincides with the reports in literature in the region of the Noteć Valley. In most cases those are heavily disturbed systems, transitional in nature, which must have been the reason for a relatively high level of species variation. The habitat preferences of Ostericum palustre, determined with Ellenberg's indicator values (L, T), correspond to the values optimal for the species. Soil, on the other hand, can be referred to as slightly acid, average fertile and mostly moist.
The trial of explanation of the phenomenon of peat soil degradation was undertaken on the basic of literature and experiments carried out in cooperation between Polish and Belarussian institutes
In two fishponds (area of 1.6 ha and 0.2 ha, depth to 1.5 m) in Silesian Upland (Southern Poland) rare in Europe species Aulodrilus japonicus Yamaguchi, 1953 was found to the first time in Polish fauna. The water bodies are slightly acid, soft (total hardness up to 96 mg CaCO₃ l⁻¹) and nutrient rich. A. japonicus occurred during the whole study period (from March to November) in both ponds. The greatest abundance (up to 120 ind.m⁻²) was observed in the summer, however the mature specimens were never found.
The paper shows the use of Kohonen's network for classification of basaltoides on the base of chemical properties of soils and Polypodium vulgare L. The study area was Lower Silesia (Poland). The archival data were: chemical composition of types of basaltoides from 89 sites (Al2O3, CaO, FeO, Fe2O3, K2O, MgO, MnO, Na2O, P2O5, SiO2 and TiO2), elements contents in soils (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Ti and Zn) and leaves of P. vulgare (Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Ni, P, Pb, S, Ti and Zn) from 20 sites. Descriptive statistical parameters of soils and leaves chemical properties have been shown, statistical analyses using ANOVA and relationships between chemical elements were carried out, and SOFM models have been constructed. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological maps of plant and soil chemical properties are similar. The constructed models are related with significantly different contents of elements in plants and soils. These models represent different chemical types of soils and are connected with ordination of types of basaltoides worked out by SOFM model of TAS division. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties.
