In the 1997 flood the Oder broke one of its meanders on the Polish-Czech border and formed a new bed. Plans on filling the bed and construction designs are under preparation. The Worldwide Wildlife Fund asked Polish and Czech authorities to stop work until 2003: this time was used for studies on rubble transport, bed-forming processes, flood hazard and inventory of natural resources. The studies indicate that leaving this area in the present state does not pose a threat to adjacent areas, preserving unique processes of the river morphology. The authors of the article justifie such an approach.
