Acute (6.25 mg dm-3, exposure 36 h) and subacute (2.08 and 1.04 mg dm-3, exposure 1-8 weeks) levels of selenium caused periglomerular fibrosis accompanied with intrafiltration of blood cells in the capsular space. Proliferative glomerulonephritis as well as fragmentation and necrosis of cells of the renal tubule were also observed. However, no remarkable change was noted in fish exposed to a sublethal (0.625 mg dm-3) concentration of Se for 1-8 weeks.
An increase in feeding frequency and stock density generally enhanced total production. Maximum final mean body weight was recorded in fish fed once in 2 days at a density of 1 fish per 5 dm3. Fish fed once in 2 days exhibited the maximum conversion rate and efficiency and this may be considered as the optimum feeding for M. keletius. An increase in density beyond 1 fish per 5 dm3 significantly reduced all food utilization parameters except absorption efficiency. The adverse effects of high density could be compensated by increasing the feeding schedule.
Profiles of oocyte growth were obtained from female freshwater catfish Mystus montanus held in salinity ranging from freshwater (0 ‰ salinity) to sea water (35 ‰ salinity) during two consecutive spawning seasons (1999) of south-west monsoon (June-August) and north-east monsoon (October-December). Females underwent vitellogenesis at all salinities 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35‰) tested. Females maturing in 0 ‰ (freshwater salinity content) and 15‰ (brackish water salinity content) exhibited a slower rate of oocyte growth and a significantly lower incidence of completed vitellogenesis. The test individuals died in the salinity values of 20, 25, 30, and 35‰. The other test individuals were induced to spawn at different salinities (0-15‰). The number of fertilized eggs per spawning was the highest from females maturing in 5‰ and followed by 10‰. More females were able to spawn twice (two monsoon periods) in 5 and 10‰ salinities than 0 and 15‰ salinities. The present results suggest that increasing the salinity values from 0 to 10‰ in freshwater are adequate for ovarian maturation in freshwater catfish Mystus montanus females.
Background. Usage of biosciences in increasing fish production needs to have a proper understanding and knowledge of endocrine physiology of fish reproduction. The most suitable method of determining the reproductive cycle in fishes is to observe seasonal development changes in the gonads. The present paper describes morphological changes in gonads of Mystus montanus. Materials and Methods. The individuals of M. montanus were sampled monthly in captive condition throughout one year to determine the changes occurring in gonadal histology and reproductive status. The stages of gonadal maturation and the seasonal changes in the proportion of oocyte development within the ovaries were noticed and maturity stages were assessed by microscopic and also macroscopic observations. Results. The peak spawning period of Mystus montanus was noticed during November-January in male and October-December in female. The size at first maturity was 10-11 cm (8-12 g) in male and 13-14 cm (14-16 g) in female, respectively. M. montanus spawned only once in a year with the onset of north-east monsoon. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) ranged from 2.8 to 8.5 in males and from 4 to 16 in females and their condition factor (CF) was 4-6 and 6-9, respectively. Conclusion. The sequence of gonadal maturation in M. montanus is morphologically and histologically divided into five stages viz. immature, maturing, mature, matured, and spent or rest.
Exposure of the freshwater catfish H. fossilis to an acute concentration of 0.20 mg dm-3 (l/5th of 4 days LC50) of malachite green for 4 days evoked hepatic and muscle glycogenolysis with concomitant hyperglycaemia and chloraemia. Exposure of fish to sub-acute 0.10 mg dm-3 (l/10th of 4 days LC50) and sub-lethal 0.05 mg dm-3 (l/20th of 4 days LC50) concentrations of the dye also evoked a significant increase in blood glucose and chloride levels at short (10-20 days) and long (30-60 days) term as well as liver and muscle glycogenolysis at short term. However, there were no marked changes in the liver glycogen content at the sub-lethal dose or muscle glycogen content at either sub-acute or sub-lethal concentrations for long term exposure.
