This paper examined the food security challenges vis-á-vis the paradox of increased domestic food production and food import in Nigeria. The study used time-series data from National Bureau of Statistic, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria’s National Dailies and CIA Factbook reports. The trend analysis showed that the share of agriculture to the total Gross Domestic Product, GDP had a downward trend, especially from 1960-1979, where food import hovered around 2.92 % from 1960-74 and up to 9.85 % in 1975-79 of GDP. The result depicts an undulating trend in the contribution of agriculture and food import values to 2009 where food import rose astronomically from N2.6trillion (3.83 %) in 2005-2009 to about N20.6trillion (25.02 %) in 2010-2012. Results of the regression analysis confirmed that agriculture has a positive relationship with GDP, and contributes significantly with a coefficient of 0.852. The paradox however is that food import negates the a priori expectation as it is found to be positively related to the GDP: as food production increases marginally, food importation increases asymptotically. The paper recommends that reliance on food import could be minimized through increased budgetary allocation to the sector, and improvement in postharvest management practices that have hitherto, aggravated food insecurity in the country.

Perspectives for competitive growth are put in the core of the re-industrialization policy of the European Union for the next program period, and respectively are key issue for the Bulgarian industrial policy. Re-industrialization of the Bulgarian economy is possible in terms of support for competitive industries at present, but also to support industries that are at the bottom of competitiveness. The methodology for selection of appropriate “priority” sub-sectors and production specializations, is based on the following two principles: 1. A combination of economic criteria (at national and company level) and social criteria; 2. Measures targeted both: certain sub-sectors and production specializations that either have a competitive advantage, or are at the bottom of the rankings for competitive advantage. On the basis of analysis six production specializations in food industry were identifi ed for which specifi c policy measures have to be developed along the chain raw materials/inputs – production-marketing/export.

Innovation for food safety

88%
Safe food production and establishing food security are tasks which all actors in the food chain are actively involved in and can only be met if the participants are willing to constantly adopt to ever more varied and stringent requirements. The study, using examples from Hungary, reveals that agricultural food companies can create and apply solutions through imitation, adaptive innovation and by responding, in realtime, to market situations, thus leading to resource efficiency and competitiveness. To attain the aforementioned, all the presented case study reports require the acquisition of information, an open-minded approach and sound managerial skills. Primarily, there is a need for cooperation among the food chain participants, especially from the side of small and medium farms.
Background. Style and pace of life make consumers more willing to reach for snack products. This group of processed food includes, among others, fruit chips. Due to the increasing incidence of diseases associated with the excessive exposure to free radicals foods enriched with antioxidant compounds, eg. polyphenols, can be introduced into the sale. Objective. The aim of the study was to use the fruit extracts for the production of apple chips with enhanced antioxidant activity. Material and methods. ‘Golden Delicious’ variety of apple fruit was used to produce chips. Apple chips were prepared by slicing, soaking in a sugar solution and pre-drying in a microwave oven. Chips were enriched with extracts prepared from fruits of chokeberry, five-flavor berry, Cornelian cherry, woodland hawthorn, goji berry, Japanese quince and cranberry microcarpa. For this purpose, pre-dried apple slices were soaked (5 min) in ethanolic extract of fruits and then dried to achieve a 5% moisture content. Chips were sensory evaluated and their antioxidant activity and total polyphenols content were determined. Results. All enriched apple chips were characterized by high antioxidant activity and a relatively high value of total polyphenols content. Chips soaked in extracts of five-flavor berry, cranberry and goji berry were characterized by the highest antioxidant potential. Samples obtained by using chokeberry and Cornelian cherry extracts showed the highest content of polyphenols. High sensory attractiveness of enriched chips was also showed. The chips with the addition of fiveflavor berry extract were exceptions. Their taste was not acceptable. Conclusions. Fruit extracts are a valuable material for chips enrichment. Taking into account all the analyzed differentiators, extracts of Japanese quince, goji berry and woodland hawthorn were found to be the best enriching additives. The chips soaked in extract of five-flavor berry, despite their high antioxidant activity, were disqualified due to very low score of sensory evaluation.

Competitive changes of food production in Bulgaria

75%
Agri-food sector is one of the traditionally well-developed sectors in Bulgaria. The export picture of Bulgarian food industry has been changed after the full EU membership of the country in 2007. Thus, the food import exceeds the food export more than twice nowadays. The aim of the paper is to reveal why Bulgarian food producers have lost their competitive advantages so fast, what kind of factors drives the food producers to worsen their production in comparison with other food-market players? The analyse showed that the food producers do not use effi ciently inter-business competitive factors (technology development and transfer as well as package design and service development). On the sectorial level, the food producers focus on to the resource management and they miss to enlarge their competitiveness by cooperation with suppliers, consumers or other food processors.
The objectives of this paper are: a) assemble baseline information on the current status and trends of New York State agribusiness economic activity, disaggregated by industry and agribusiness cluster sectors, b) estimate backward linkages and inter-industry relationships between food and agricultural production and other agribusiness industry clusters via the calculation of output multipliers, c) set the stage for continuing discussion of the challenges and opportunities for agribusiness development in New York State.

Transgenic plants - genetically modified food

75%
The analysis of changes undergoing in plant production and food industry enables concluding that food production in the XXIst century will additionally be based on genetically modified organisms. The article reports on general ideas concerning genetically modified organisms, selected transgenic plants and crop acreage planted to genetically modified plants in Poland and world wide. The government policy on transgenic food is analysed as well.

The changes on the organic food market

75%
The paper presents the state of and changes to the organic food market in Poland between 2004 and 2014. The study covered production, processing, distribution chains, price levels and consu mption of organic food. The analyses were carried out based on data obtained from reports on organic farming elaborated by the AFQI, and the author’s own survey on organic and conventional food prices. It was found that the dynamically growing number of organic farms is not refl ected in high growth dynamics in the organic food supply. Processing is also a weak element of the organic food market, showing low growth dynamics. Organic food processing is characterised by a spatial mismatch: in particular regions with considerable concentrations of organic farms, there are fewer processing plants than in regions with fewer farms. This spatial mismatch between production and processing of organic food means that some producers of organic raw materials are forced to sell their products as conventional food, which results in obtaining lower prices and lower profi tability of production. The main change in organic food distribution chains is an increase in the share of specialist shops and growing availability of this kind of product in conventional stores. The study showed that average prices of organic food in Poland are high. Therefore, consumers regularly purchasing organic food make up a small share of the market.
The influence of powdered fruits of Foeniculum capillaceum Gilib. on the fecundity of Sitophilus oryzae was examined. The powder was added in paper bags to the rearing of the insects to prevent a direct contact. The significant reduction of the fecundity of females was recorded. The sequent effect of activity of the powder was also observed. It resulted in the decrease of the fecundity of offspring generation - F2 reared on wheat gains without the powder.
