Plumage bacteria might influence the trade-off between parental and self-preening efforts in birds, therefore affecting breeding success. However, too little is known about natural variation patterns in plumage bacterial communities for these hypotheses to be thoroughly assessed. We studied the density and phylotypic richness of plumage bacterial assemblages in wild breeding populations of Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca and Great Tits Parus major in the same area and breeding season, using flow cytometry and ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA). The density of plumage bacteria was higher in Tits than in Flycatchers, providing evidence that bacterial microflora differs even between co-occurring hosts that share habitat, nest site and foraging preferences. It is concurrent with the finding that migratory birds might have lower bacterial loads than sedentary birds. In both species bacterial loads were higher in females than in males, which along with two earlier studies, indicates the generality of this sex pattern. A negative correlation between parental body mass and the richness of feather-degrading bacterial phylotypes was found in Pied Flycatchers. In Great Tits, higher bacterial densities in the plumage of parent birds were associated with the production of fewer fledglings. However, the causality of these associations remains to be tested experimentally.
Keratinolytic abilities of Bacillus polymyxa B20 and B. cereus B5esz were evaluated in liquid cultures in mineral media containing chicken feathers. Both tested strains were capable of effective liquefying and biodegradation of feather keratin, up to 56.5 – 72.1% in ten-day cultures, releasing considerable amounts of hydrolysis products. Tested bacteria were mesophilic species, producing highest activity of keratinases and proteases in the presence of keratin (1%) as a sole nutrient source or keratin supplemented with yeast extract, at 30℃. Keratinases of B. polymyxa were predominantly highly alkaline serine proteases, with optimum activity at 50℃, while B. cereus produced mainly a mixture of neutral proteases, optimally active at 45℃. Keratinolytic potential of tested bacterial strains could find a variety of applications, including utilization of keratinous waste from poultry industry and obtaining keratin hydrolysate-based soil fertilizers.
Plumage is regularly replaced over the lifetime of birds, and, consequently, variable conditions experienced during plumage development can affect feather growth rate or the expression of feather characteristics. We assessed intra-individual constancy in the length, mass, and growth rate of tail feathers between complete moults of 13 free-living individual Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla. Between-moult repeatability was high for the length and mass, but not for growth rate of individual tail feathers. The feathers produced in the later moult grew at a slower rate, which shows that the time to produce similar feathers increases with age.
The increasing generation of keratinic wastes by the poultry industry stimulated research on novel, costeffective methods of keratin protein management respecting current environmental regulations. Enzymatic treatment of feather waste with microbial keratinases appears to be one of the most promising methods to obtain valuable products. Nevertheless, the action of keratinolytic proteases requires the support of disulfide bond-reducing agents to reveal their full potential. The presented study was aimed at evaluating effects of moderate thermo-chemical feather pretreatment, preceding hydrolysis with two crude microbial keratinases from Bacillus cereus B5esz and B. subtilis P22. Keratinases of both tested strains exhibited capability for degradation of native feathers, but substrate pretreatment resulted in significant improvement of the process. Application of 10 mM sulfite in the pretreatment remained to be the most appropriate option, leading to 160% or 95% activity enhancement of keratinases from B. cereus and B. subtilis, respectively. Pretreatment with 10 mM NaOH also gave a satisfactory effect. Pepsin digestibility was mostly influenced either by 1 mM sulfite pretreatment or by sole autoclaving. Crude keratinase from B. cereus, a potent keratinase producer, expressed only four times lower specific activity against raw feathers in comparison to purified commercial proteinase K, and the action of both enzyme preparations was influenced by sulfite pretreatment of the substrate. Additionally, the concentrated culture broth of B. cereus B5esz proved to be highly applicable in degradation of raw feathers, especially in the presence of sulfite or sulfite-pretreated feathers.
Caudipteryx zoui is a small enigmatic theropod known from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation of the People’s Republic of China. From the time of its initial description, this taxon has stimulated a great deal of ongoing debate regarding the phylogenetic relationship between non−avialan theropods and birds (Avialae) because it preserves structures that have been uncontroversially accepted as feathers (albeit aerodynamically unsuitable for flight). However, it has also been proposed that both the relative proportions of the hind limb bones (when compared with overall leg length), and the position of the center of mass in Caudipteryx are more similar to those seen in extant cusorial birds than they are to other non−avialan theropod dinosaurs. This conclusion has been used to imply that Caudipteryx may not have been correctly interpreted as a feathered non−avialan theropod, but instead that this taxon represents some kind of flightless bird. We review the evidence for this claim at the level of both the included fossil specimen data, and in terms of the validity of the results presented. There is no reason—phylogenetic, morphometric or otherwise—to conclude that Caudipteryx is anything other than a small non−avialan theropod dinosaur.
This study was conducted to identify the differences and similarities among three Japanese quail (JQ) lines (JQ lines: white, brown and wild-black) and the European quail (EQ). The qRT-PCR was used to determine the expression of growth related genes: growth hormone (GH) and Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), immune genes (Interleukins 1β, IL-1β, Interferon-α, IFN-α), pigmentation genes; dopachrome tautomerase, (Dct) and endothelin receptor type B2, (EdnrB2) in several quail tissues, while PCR-RFLP analysis of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene was conducted in quail meat. Expression levels of the pigmentation related genes (Dct and EdnrB2) were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the JQBr and EQ lines than in JQwh and they were comparable between JQbr and wild EQ. Expression levels of the growth related genes (GH and IGF-1) were significantly higher in 3 JQ lines than in EQ. No differences between all 4 quail lines were found in the expression of the immune related genes. In conclusion, the PCR-RFLP method may be used to distinguish between the Japanese and the European quail, which is important for breeding programs, labeling meat products and biodiversity studies.
A total of 445 domestic pigeons were genotyped for the lactate dehydrogenase (LDHA) gene. Crude DNA was isolated from blood samples and feathers. Two polymorphic sites were identified in intron 6: one near the splice donor site GT is called site H and the other near the splice acceptor site is called site B. Interestingly, the nucleotide changes of both these sites associate perfectly with the A and B alleles of HaeIII polymorphism: the A allele with nucleotide A of site H and nucleotide T of site B; while the B allele with nucleotide G of site H and nucleotide G of site B. In this study, we have identified the molecular difference between alleles A and B of the pigeon LDHA gene. The difference at site H in intron 6 explains the Hae III polymorphism. The frequencies of LDHA AB and LDHA BB genotypes between the analysed groups differ significantly (P < 0.001); the LDHA A allele was more frequent in the groups of pigeons with elevated homing performance (P < 0.001). The functional difference may be due to the change at site B, the potential splice branch site. Since LDHA activity is associated with the homing ability, it is possible that during the process of selection for the homing ability, the LDHA A allele has been selected, and is more prevalent in the top-racing groups.
The paper presents results of research concerning an assessment of bioaccumulation of copper, manganese and zinc in Lohmann Brown layer hens (5 groups of 12 hens in each). Using ICP-MS method the concentration of these elements was determined in the content and shell of eggs, whole blood and in feathers of hens. Feeding was based on all-mash feed mixture J-297 type with a content of Cu – 21.8, Fe – 200.8, Mn 140.5 mg⋅kg-1, but in particular groups the contribution of organic and inorganic forms of these 3 microelements was different. Content of Zn in the mixture was 86 mg⋅kg-1 (zinc oxide). Microelements in the amounts of: Cu – 10, Fe – 40 and Mn – 80 mg⋅kg-1 were separately introduced to the control and to the test mixtures by using special premixes. In the control version, inorganic forms of these elements were used in a premix (copper sulfate, iron sulfate and manganese oxide), while in the experimental version they appeared in the organic form, i.e. Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts enriched with the three elements. In the experimental mixtures the contribution of organic forms of microelements was for Cu – 47, Fe – 20 and Mn – 58%. Content of the premix in a mixture was 0.5%. Yeasts contained: Fe – 33.9, Mn – 35.4, and Cu – 22.7 mg⋅kg-1 d.m. Content of yeasts in the mixtures did not exceed 0.4%. Application of organic forms of copper caused a significant increase in copper concentration in the egg content and shell, in blood and in feathers in the group receiving organic- Cu, which proves better availability of copper from organic forms compared to copper sulfate. Introduction of organic forms of iron and manganese to feed did not cause any significant changes in the content of these metals in eggs, blood and feathers of hens, except the organic-Mn group (the level of Mn in feathers was significantly higher in feathers compared to the control group). Organic forms of copper, manganese and iron did not result in any interactions with respect to Zn although an antagonistic influence of Cu (organic- Cu group) and synergistic of Mn (organic-Mn group) in the egg content was observed.
The mycoflora developing on the feathers of wild and domestic bird species in the water of 6 limnologically different water bodies was investigated under laboratory conditions. 97 zoosporic fungus species were found to grow on the feathers investigated, including 21 Chytridiomycetes, 1 Hyphochytriomycetes, 74 Oomycetes and 1 Zygomycetes fungus. The most common fungus species included Chytriomycetes annulatus, Rhizophydium keratinophilum, Blastocladiopsis parva, Catenaria anguillulae, Catenophlyctis variabilis, Aphanomyces helicoides, Aphanomyces irregularis, Leptolegniella piligena, Pythium afertile, Pythium aquatile, Pythium echinulatum, Pythium intermedium and Pythium tenue. The most fungi were noted growing in water from Cypisek spring (64), the fewest in the ponds Akcent (45) and Fosa (47 species). Out of these 97 species, 17 are known as parasites or necrotrophs of fish. 13 fungus species were recorded for the first time in Poland.
W Stacji Doświadczalnej IUNG-PIB w Jelczu-Laskowicach przeprowadzono doświadczenia mikropoletkowe, których celem była ocena przydatności rolniczej produktów nawozowych pochodzących z przemysłu rolno-spożywczego. Badano produkty nawozowe w formie stałej oraz w formie płynnej o zawartości N ogólnego - kolejno 6 i 8%, P - 3,5 i 1,5%, K - 5,6 i 6% i S - 6-7% zawierające również dodatek niezbędnych dla roślin mikroelementów B, Cu, Zn i Mn. Doświadczenia prowadzono na mikropoletkach o powierzchni 3 m2 w trzech powtórzeniach. W badaniach porównywano działanie nawozowe produktów z ekwiwalentnymi, zróżnicowanymi dawkami nawozów mineralnych. Rośliną testową był rzepak jary uprawiany na glebie płowej o składzie granulometrycznym piasku gliniastego mocnego. Plonotwórcze działanie produktu nawozowego w formie stałej S - NPK(S) i prostych nawozów mineralnych stosowanych w niższej dawce było zbliżone. Po zastosowaniu wyższej dawki badanego produktu uzyskano niższe plony roślin w porównaniu do ekwiwalentnej dawki nawozów mineralnych, natomiast zbliżone do plonów rzepaku nawożonego niższą dawką produktu. Plonotwórcze działanie produktu stosowanego w formie płynnej było zbliżone do działania preparatu w formie stałej. Pobranie makroskładników z plonem rzepaku na obiektach, gdzie stosowano oceniane preparaty było zbliżone do ich pobrania na ekwiwalentnych dawkach prostych nawozów mineralnych. Stwierdzone zawartości pierwiastków śladowych w glebie po sprzęcie rzepaku były znacznie niższe od zawartości dopuszczalnych. Na podstawie wyników doświadczeń można wstępnie stwierdzić, że oceniane produkty wykazują dobrą wartość nawozową i mogą być przydatne do nawożenia roślin uprawnych.
