Body size differentiation may have developed in response to environmental gradients. A pattern of large individuals prevailing in colder areas is often observed and is explained by the heat conservation hypothesis (Bergmann's rule). To understand patterns driving body size variation in a pelagic seabird, the European Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus, we examined the relationship between wing length, body mass and environmental variables in breeding areas (sea surface temperature, air temperature and wind speed). As this species has been divided into two subspecies: Mediterranean H. p. melitensis and Atlantic H. p. pelagicus, we performed the analyses at different scales (species, Atlantic subspecies and regional North Atlantic). At the species and subspecies scales, there was a longitudinal increase in wing length from west to east. At the subspecies and regional scale, we found a latitudinal increase in this variable from south to north. This result and the significant increase of wing length with decreasing sea surface and air temperatures are concordant with Bergmann's rule. In addition, body mass at the species and subspecies scales decreased with increasing wind speed, what may have a functional implication (small body mass may increase manoeuvrability over waves in conditions of stronger wind). Both genetic (two subspecies differing in body size) and environmental factors seem to be important forces driving intercolony variation in body size. Our study on sexual size dimorphism (SSD) revealed that in 156 molecularly sexed adults from the Faeroes, wing and tail length, and body mass exhibited female-biased SSD, while head-bill length showed male-biased SSD. The best discriminant function for sexing based on body measurements correctly classified 75% of individuals. Considering low correctness of proposed functions and geographical variation of body size, use of alternative methods (e.g. molecular tools) is recommended for sex discrimination in the European Storm Petrel.
The scope of genetic variation in concentrations of minerals in potato tubers and effects of mineral fertilizers application, pesticides, growth regulators on the mineral content and the relationships of these elements in potato tubers, was analyzed. The study discussed the phenotypic variation range determined by genetic and environmental variability. The hypothesis presupposes that increased yields generated either by the application of mineral fertilizers and/or the use of cultivars with higher fertility may lead to a reduction in the concentration of minerals in potato tubers, was verified in the study.
Four populations of J. communis L. subsp. communis of natural localities in forested regions of the Bory Tucholskie (Poland) were analysed in respect of phenolic compounds concentration and –glucosidase activity. The variability noted in needles was confirmed by adaptation changes; water-logged and poor insolated localities (deciduous mixed fresh forest, dmff – no 3 and coniferous mixed bog forest, cmbf – no 4) stimulated the phenolics accumulation and enzyme activity. On the contrary, the level of phenolics in unripe berry-like cones was almost two fold lower under disadvantageous juniper growth and fructification conditions, whereas the mature berries from poor vigour plants were characterized by higher concentrations of these metabolites. Obtained results show that morphological variation of juniper population was accompanied by variability in phenolic metabolism.
Factors determining the distribution of highly endangered marsh dandelion species in Polish and Estonian coastal grasslands have been investigated. The aim of this study was twofold: (i) to determine which environmental variables are responsible for the vegetation patterns in coastal grasslands with marsh dandelion and (ii) to analyse the ecological spectra of the identified marsh dandelion species. Altogether 51 plots were sampled (in 2013 and 2014). They were used following statistical analysis: DCA, CCA, Spearman's rank correlation test, Kruskal-Wallis test and hierarchical divisive cluster analysis (TWINSPAN). In total, three marsh dandelion species were found in Polish and Estonian coastal grasslands. The only species found in Poland was Taraxacum balticum. In Estonia all three species occur: T. balticum, T. decolorans and T. suecicum. Taraxacum balticum has been found in the widest ranges of all soil properties included, usually on organic, saline, non-carbonate and acid to slightly acid substrate. Taraxacum suecicum and T. decolorans have been found only on mineral, non-saline and slightly alkaline to alkaline substrate. The ecological spectra determined for endangered marsh dandelion species can be used to improve the methods of their protection. Nomenclature: mosses - Ochyra et al. Soil variability vs potato productivity

This study is based on the results of the field experiment carried out in 1990-1992 on the soil of mechanical composition of light loamy sand. The yield and tuber structure of the crop of potato tubers of 37 varieties were evaluated. A positive effect on the crop and mass of the tubers of ϕ 4-5, 5-6 and >6 cm was exerted by the July and August rainfalls, the May and June rainfalls resulted in enlarging the tuber mass by ϕ<3 cm, and decreasing the share of the remaining tuber size fractions. The increase in atmospheric temperature in July and August caused a drop in tuber yield, and also the tuber mass of ϕ 5-6 and >6 cm in diameter. Heightening by a unit the abundance of as- simiable phosphorus and potassium in the soil at its mean level of 15.7 and 21.9 mg/100 g soil, respectively, resulted in an increase of tuber mass in the crop by ϕ<3, 3-4, 4-5 cm, and a lowering of tuber mass in the largest crop. The transition from slightly acid to neutral soil reaction caused a drop in the crop as well as the proportions of small and medium tubers and an increase in the share of marketable tubers.
