Harmonizing economic and social aims with environmental protection is national environmental policy. The high-level goal of the policy in waste management is prevention, reduction, recovery and environmentally safe final treatment. The extensions of the Second National Environmental Policy are waste management plans, prepared and adopted on national, voivodship, poviat and commune level. The plans are a novelty in Polish law, for the first time the opportunity for sorting out waste management in Poland, a particularly municipal, has been created.

Wastewater treatment in the Slovak Republic

This paper reviews the present status of sewage, wasterwater treatment and water quality management in Slovakia. The impact of discharged wastewater on the quality of receiving waters is presented. Legislation in Slovakia is compared with European legislation concerning water quality effluent standards. Typical treatment methods used are described and the problems of wastewater monitoring discussed. The serious problems with sludge treatment and disposal are analyzed. Possible perspectives with the relation of size of wastewater treatment plants and the requirements of approved effluent standards are indicated. The suggested steps for improving the present situation in this field are presented.

A hydrophyte treatment system was constructed in Bielkowo in order to protect drinking water intake for the city of Gdansk against surface and point sources of contaminants. The system consists of two subunits: a wet unit (pond), filled with water all the time and a dry unit (extension of the pond), designed for storm water. In the wet unit are placed dams constructed of medium size sand. The system, especially dams, is inhibited with macrophytes. The drainage system collects water percolating through dams, and directs it downstream. The system was constructed in 1997. After implementation of the system substantial improvement in water quality occurred.
