If we are to successfully manage our biosphere, we must learn not only about the functioning of the macro ecosystems, plant and animal populations, but also about the microorganisms, their role and the molecular and physicochemical interdependencies. We must attain as comprehensive a knowledge as possible today since we face the urgent task of regenerating areas of land devastated by human activity. The scientific knowledge is necessary not so much for the academic as practical reasons.
