Experiment with silage maize was established in 2002. Two hybrids were compared: early hybrid Birko (FAO 210) and middle early hybrid Etendard (FAO 260). Sum of effective temperatures was observed during vegetation period. There was confirmed significant dependence of sum of effective temperatures on dry matter production dynamic of silage maize. Based on study of this indicator is possible to assign optimal term of harvesting for specific hybrid on specific stand. Significant difference of dry matter content of variously matured hybrids is reached at the end of vegetation period.
Badaniu poddano plon świeżego i suchego ziela bazylii pospolitej, a następnie przeprowadzono ocenę składu chemicznego świeżego surowca przyprawowego, określając w nim zawartość: suchej masy, kwasu L-askorbinowego, cukrów ogółem i redukujących. Analizując wyniki badań wykazano, że uprawiane eko-typy Ocimum basilicum L. istotnie różnicowały wielkość plonu oraz skład ziela. Największym średnim plonem w toku trzyletnich badań charakteryzowała się bazylia cynamonowa, zaś najmniejszy średni plon ziela pozyskano z bazylii czerwonolistnej, której surowiec przyprawowy zawierał najmniej suchej masy, kwasu L-askorbinowego oraz cukrów ogółem. Najwięcej suchej masy oraz kwasu L-askorbino-wego zawierała bazylia zielonolistna, zaś największą zawartością cukrów ogółem charakteryzował się surowiec przyprawowy bazylii cynamonowej. Największą zawartością cukrów redukujących odznaczała się bazylia pospolita cytrynowa, a najmniejszą – bazylia zielonolistna. Analiza terminu siewu nasion w drugim oraz trzecim roku badań wykazała, iż wcześniejszy termin siewu istotnie zwiększał wielkość plonu oraz zawartość cukrów ogółem.
The dry matter content of 245 faecal samples of 81 species of captive wild ruminants was investigated. Samples were taken from 10 different zoos from temperate climate during the winter months. All animals had ad libitum access to drinking water. Species were classified as frugivores (FR, n = 5), browsers (BR, n = 16), intermediate feeders (IM, n = 35), and grazers (GR, n = 25). While no difference was observed in the average faecal dry matter content between the feeding types, the range of dry matter contents increased continually from FR, BR, IM to GR, ie both the driest and the wettest faeces of this study were produced by grazing ruminants. As it has been shown that faecal dry matter content is a function of the length of the colon descendens of a ruminant species, these results can be interpreted as an indication of a relatively limited variation in anatomical design in this respect in the evolutionary older FR and BR, and a relatively larger variation in anatomical design - and probably niche adaptation - in IM and GR. This corresponds to the greater range of habitat niches that IM and ÔR manage to occupy. Due to this increased variation in the anatomical design of the lower hindgut, GR are regarded as "morphophysiologically progressive ruminants", in contrast to BR which are regarded as "morphophysiologically conservative ruminants".
The study were carried out in the years 1996–1998 on the soil characterized as a good rye complex. The experiment was set according to the method of randomized sub blocks at 3 replications. The four following factors were examined: 1) cultivation technologies: a) conventional technology – control, b) with polyethylene sheeting, c) with polypropylene sheeting, d) with double shield of polypropylene and polyethylene sheeting; 2) methods of weed control of potato: a) mechanical, b) with Afalon, c) with Racer, d) with herbicide mixture Afalon + Command; 3) potato cultivars: Aster and Drop; 4) harvest terms: a) 60 days after planting, b) 75 days after planting, c) harvest at full maturity. Coverage application at potato cultivation, as compared to traditional one, contributed to the decrease of dry mass and the increase of starch, total sugars, reducing sugars and sacharose in the potato tubers.
Thyme belongs to herbal plants, the yield and quality of which depend on biological factors, agrotechnical procedures and the way of processing and storage. Basic factor differentiating the biological value of plants is fertilization, including manure, as well as plant growth and development, which is significantly influenced by the pH of the substrate, in which the plants are grown. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of manure dose (12.5 and 25 g·dm–3) and calcium carbonate (5 and 15 g·dm–3) on the yield and biological value of thyme. The fresh thyme mass yield was changed under the influence of the factors used. The highest yield of raw material was recorded after using a high dose of manure and calcium carbonate. Significantly higher concentration of essential oil in thyme was found after feeding the plants with higher dose of manure. The inverse relationship was demonstrated for the amount of L-ascorbic acid that decreased with the increase in manure dose. Calcium fertilizers not only serve to regulate the acidity, but are also a source of calcium for plants. After applying a higher dose of CaCO3, significant increase in the yield of fresh thyme mass was observed and higher dry matter content was recorded
The aim of the 3 × 3 factorial experiment on broilers was to investigate the effect of high dietary levels of potassium (K) and different levels of sodium (Na) on chicken performance, carcass traits, dry matter content in excreta and nitrogen balance. Three hundred and sixty one-day-old Ross 308 chickens were allocated to 9 groups, in 5 replicates of 8 (4♂ and 4♀). Chickens from 1 to 42 days old were kept in cages with wire floors to enable excreta collection, and were provided with water and feed ad libitum. The basal starter (days 1-14) and grower (days15-42) diets contained, as analysed, 1.73 g and 1.89 g·kg-1 chloride (Cl), 10.7 g and 10.8 g K and 0.69 and 0.94 g Na, respectively. Basal diets were supplemented with cations containing, as analysed, 12.2/11.8 g and 12.7/12.5 g·kg-1 K and 1.22/1.25 g and 1.68/1.61 g·kg-1 Na, for the starter/grower periods of feeding, respectively. The molar proportion of Na:K in diets used in the experiment ranged from 0.09 to 0.27 in the starter diet and from 0.13 to 0.25 in the grower/finisher diet; the dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) values varied between 255 to 349 and 264 to 336, respectively. During the starter feeding period, body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) in the chickens were positively affected by increasing the Na supplement. Throughout the feeding period, Na supplementation improved BWG, FI and FCR and production index values and increased carcass yield. The dry matter content of the excreta was negatively affected by the K level in the diet; the 12.7 g K dietary content, in particular, caused a higher moisture content. The daily intake of nitrogen and nitrogen excretion grew when the dietary Na level was increased from 0.94 to 1.25 or 1.61 g·kg-1. The proportion of N retained to N intake decreased significantly when the dietary level of Na reached 1.61 g·kg-1, as compared to the proportion at a level of 0.94 g Na·kg-1. Interaction between dietary Na and K levels for BWG and other indices of performance, and for nitrogen utilization, confirm a dietary reciprocal relationship for both electrolytes.
The paper presents the variability analysis of some quantitative characteristics, that is of tuber yield, starch content and yield, dry matter content and yield and vitamin C content in selected edible potato varieties. Reciprocal relations of variance components calculated and their percentage share in the total variability were a measure of variability evaluation for the characteristics examined. Moreover, the variability of the characteristics was characterised by means of the classical variability coefficient. It has been found that tuber yield and vitamin C content variability was determined mainly by the interaction effects of years and the factors examined, as well as the experimental error. The respective values were as follows: 44.3% and 34.7% for tuber yield, and 42.2% and 46.2% for vitamin C. The starch content was in 47.5% modified by the effects of the main factors (including 35.0% for years) and the error effect (39.0%). A similar interaction was observed in the case of dry matter content variability, but the error was 52.4%. Starch and dry matter yields were determined mainly by interaction effects of the years and the examined factors (40.7% and 39.9%, respectively) as well as the experimental error (32.2% of the total variability for both traits). The highest changes expressed as the values of the coefficient of variation were found for tuber yield, dry matter yield and starch yield.
In food colorants microencapsulation process, apart from appropriate carrier selection, the determination of the spray drying parameters which can affect the retention of active ingredients is essential. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of drying parameters on beetroot pigments retention after microencapsulation. Raw material used in the study was the 100% beetroot juice. Low-crystallised maltodextrin DE=11 (MD) was used as the carrier. To obtain 30% dry matter concentration in the solution, the proper amount of maltodextrin was added to beet root juice with 15% of dry matter. Drying was carried out in a spray-drier at disc speed of 39,000 rpm and solution flux rate of 0.3·10-6 and 0.8·10-6 m3 s-1. The inlet air temperature was 120, 140 and 160oC, at a constant air flow rate of 0.0055 m3 s-1. Before drying, viscosity and density of the solutions were measured. Dry matter content, apparent density, loose bulk density of the powder, and porosity were determined. The particle morphology was tested as well. Pigment content was measured by Nillson (1970) and Von Elbe (2001) methods to determine the efficiency of encapsulation. The viscosity and density of solutions of beet juice with maltodextrin was 3.86 mPa s and 1100 kg m-3, respectively. In both cases, the values of viscosity and density were higher compared to the raw juice. Increase of solution flux rate caused a decrease of dry matter content, apparent particle density and loose bulk density. Increase of inlet air temperature caused an increase of dry matter content, average diameter and a decrease of both densities. It was observed that the increase of inlet air temperature caused a decrease in the yellow pigment to a higher degree (47%) than in the violet pigment (17%). However, no clear correlation was observed for violet pigment. There were no changes in porosity and shape factor. The obtained microcapsules were sphere-like in shape, with numerous deep cavities. In the whole experiment the retention of beet root pigments was in the range of 26.7-29.3%.
