As a result of plant tissue deformation irreversible physical processes that finally lead to the state of resistance, take place. One of these irreversible processes is cracking of the cell structure that occurs through cell wall breaking and losing cohesion in the layer of pectin lamella. As a result of these phenomena a signal of acoustic emission is emitted. In the present study the method of acoustic emission and its application in studying the processes of plant tissue cracking are described.

W wyniku odkształcania tkanki roślinnej zachodzą w niej nieodwracalne procesy fizyczne, prowadzą w konsekwencji do osiągnięcia stanu wytrzymałości. Jednym z tych nieodwracalnych procesów jest niszczenie struktury komórkowej, które zachodzi poprzez pękanie błon komórkowych oraz utratę spójności w warstwie pektynowych lamelli. W wyniku tych zjawisk emitowany jest sygnał emisji akustycznej. W pracy opisano metodę emisji akustycznej i jej zastosowanie do badań procesów pękania tkanek roślinnych.

Short- and medium-distance migrant birds that return to the breeding grounds early can usually take better-quality territory leading to higher breeding success than of congeners arriving later. On the other hand, early breeders usually have to face severe weather conditions. 109 Black-headed Gulls which had begun laying in a breeding colony (N-Poland) earlier than the remaining 960 females lost 66.2% of eggs because of severely adverse weather. On 9 April 2012 ambient temperature fell to -4.6°C during the first two hours after sunrise (06:00–07:59) resulting in eggs cracking during the adults' first feeding bout after the night. Up to 1 mm wide cracks in eggshells were from 3 mm to 24 mm long; in some eggs the external shell membrane also broke. Pairs that lost eggs did not repeat broods. In this way in 2012 this colony suffered the greatest loss of eggs during its 15-years history. This event showed that even in the temperate climate, adverse weather, a consequence of the global climate change, does have negative impact on life history traits of birds.

The general characteristics: particle size distribution, pH, cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, total NPK, surface area; and physical properties: coefficient of linear extensibility, tensile strength, shear strength and cracking, were investigated in unproductive soils of Northern China. Principle component analysis showed that tensile strength, cohesion, cracking characteristics, clay content, cation exchange capacity and coefficient of linear extensibility were positively correlated with each other, whereas negatively correlated with angle of friction, indicating that these properties were subjected to clay % and smectite content. These correlations might be mainly responsible for low productivity (low yields) in Northern China.
