The changes in the milk composition and its lipid fraction during the rearing of lambs in non-milked sheep. Studies regarding the effect of lactation stage on milk content and lipid fraction composition are mostly conducted on milked animals. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in the basic milk composition and content of fatty acids in the fat fraction during the rearing of lambs in non-milked sheep. The study was carried out on 22 ewes of Polish lowland sheep of Żelazneńska strain, which reared lambs sold at low weight classes (up to 22 kg). Milk samples were collected at 10 (period 1), 25 (period 2) and 52 (period 3) days of lactation. There were no differences in the amount of the basic components of milk in the studied periods of lactation beside the fat (P≤ 0.05) content. There were also no difference in the content of fatty acid groups in the fat fraction of ewe’s milk examined at 10, 25 and 52 day of lactation.Although,in the third period of lactation, the content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was slightlyhigher compared to first period. In turn, the content of oleic acid (P≥0.30) and C18:3 (P≤ 0.05) was higher in the 10 day of rearing then in 52 day. A slightly larger share of essential C18 unsaturated fatty acids in ewe’s milk in early lactation may suggest the involvement of adipose tissue in the formation of milk fat.
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) contains numerous biologically active compounds. However, their levels change during processing and storage. The objective of the research study was to determine the effect of short-term storage (1 ÷ 4 days) of broccoli heads at different temperatures (3 ºC, 16 ºC, and 21 ºC) on the contents of phenolic acids, selected flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol), and tocopherols. Broccoli heads were harvested in autumn when they reached their maximum size and their buds were 2 mm in diameter. The content of phenolics and tocopherols depended on the storage time of broccoli heads. The lowest content of phenolics was found immediately after the broccoli was harvested, whereas the highest content thereof was reported after 4 days of storage. However, the storage temperature did not impact the contents of those compounds. In the research study, the content of caffeic acid was reported to be highest in the fresh broccoli heads; the content of sinapic acid was the second-highest, and that of the ferulic acid was the third-highest. The content of kaempferol in the broccoli heads was higher than that of quercetin. No differences were reported in the content of quercetin and kaempferol at particular storage temperatures on every single day of the experiment. An increase was reported only when compared with the control sample (the 0 day of storage). In the broccoli heads, the predominant tocopherol was α-tocopherol. The lowest loss in the total tocopherols occurred while storing at a temperature of 3 ºC and the highest: at a temperature of 21 ºC.
Changes in the amino acid profile of protein during ensiling depend on the proteolytic potential of plant species, the rate of the wilting and acidifying of ensiled herbage and, on the other hand, on the microbiological processes and fermentation of amino acids. The interaction of these factors determines the subsequent efficiency of nitrogen utilization in the rumen. The aim of this study has been to determine the influence of ensiling in round bales on changes in the amino acid content in lucerne and red clover silages. The amino acid composition was determined by analyzing the content of amino acids in herbages and silages. The lucerne silage protein was characterized by a higher contribution of all amino acids except Trp in comparison with red clover silage. Ensiling in bales of wilted lucerne and clover herbage lowered the content of Asp, His (P < 0.01), Ile, Lys (P < 0.05) in both plants. The ensiling process and plant species affected (P < 0.05) the total content of amino acids per 100 g of protein, where the range of changes in both raw materials was different. The loss of amino acids observed during the ensiling of wilted lucerne in round bales should be regarded as typical, whereas changes in the amino acid profile of red clover should be considered as atypical. A significantly higher ADIN content in red clover than in lucerne silage indicates that a rapid and significant increase of temperature occurred in experimental bales, which were characterized by a low degree of density, and this temperature rise strongly affected the availability of amino acids of the red clover protein also to the current microflora in the silage. Ensiling in round bales changed the amino acid profile of the lucerne and red clover protein. The ensiling process in this technology, however, severely deteriorated the quality of the red clover protein by lowering the content of all essential amino acids except Cys and Met.
Both native and non-native predators should strongly affect resident fauna. Nevertheless, because of a lack of defensive mechanisms in potential prey, the influence of non-native predators should have longer-lasting and more deleterious repercussions. The breeding ecology of the Coot was studied in the Milicz Ponds reserve and compared with data from 20 years earlier. In the meantime, non-native, mammalian predators (American Mink Mustela vison, Raccoon Dog Nyctereutes procyonoides and Raccoon Procyon lotor) turned up in this area, while the numbers of Hooded Crow Corvus cornix, the main predator of Coot nests, decreased. Compared with 1980-1982, the number of Coots in 2002-2003 dropped by more than half and mean clutch size decreased. Breeding success and the number of hatchlings per pair remained unchanged; in the 1980s, however, Coots renested more frequently, there was greater nesting synchrony and breeding seasons were demonstrably shorter. Moreover, although predation still remained the main cause of losses, its numbers were decreasing. Coots nesting on islands were the most successful, which was due to the weaker predation on the part of Crows. In contrast, the mammalian (non-native) predators did not appear to play a significant role in the breeding success in 2002-2003. Nevertheless, taking into account the breeding parameters of the Coot population and the nature of the relationship between mammalian/bird predators and Coots, it does seem that the low density of Coots in 2002-2003 was a reaction to the pressure of mammalian predators.
Celem pracy było określenie wpływu zmiany składu surowcowego i warunków przechowywania na wybrane właściwości fizyczne napojów kakaowych w proszku. Zakres pracy obejmował analizę zawartości suchej substancji, gęstości nasypowej luźnej i utrzęsionej, barwy oraz zwilżalności surowców i mieszanin o zróżnicowanym składzie surowcowym.
Abandoned semi-natural limestone grasslands are often overgrown by shrubs and trees. Little is know if and to what extant xerothermic limestone grasslands can be restored by tree cutting. This was tested in a 12-year experiment after the clearing of a 35-year-old secondary pine wood developed on unmanaged grassland in the close proximity of not overgrown old grassland. After 12 years, there were no significant differences in the number of field layer species on the plots in the old and restored grasslands. But over this period the number of meadow species increased in all sites, while the number of xerothermic calcareous species increased significantly only in the old grassland plots. The developing shrub layer negatively influenced the number of nitrophilous and ruderal species in grasslands restored in the former close and open woods, and the number of all species, including the number of non-tufted perennials and perennials with vegetative spread, in the former open wood. The number of meadow species increased in years with higher precipitation in late spring and early summer. The obtained results suggest that in overgrowing grasslands shrubs and trees should be cut every few years, before their covers increase to about 30%. However, this treatment alone will not stop the changes to communities with dominance of tall and vegetatively spreading grasses and forbs. Cutting trees and shrubs in sites where most grassland species have already vanished, without additional managements supporting their dispersal, seedling recruitment and development, is not sufficient to restore limestone grasslands rich in xerothermic species.
The plant material taken for the study was collected from maize fields in Denmark. In total, maize cobs were collected from 58 fields of 15 farms (9 organic and 6 traditional ones). The plant material (97 samples) was divided according to the following criteria: maize cultivars, effective temperature sum (ETS) during growing period, type of farm (traditional and organic farms). The dry matter content of maize cob samples was determined as well as starch, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), phosphorus and magnesium content. The dry matter content was negatively correlated with NDF and ADF, but positively correlated with starch. A highly negative correlation of starch content with NDF and ADF was found.
Denning and sett construction made by the red fox and Eurasian badger may cause changes in forest vegetation. These changes relate to both the cover and the species composition of forest-floor vegetation, with some plant species being eliminated and some promoted in the vicinity of dens and setts. In general, there is a reduction in the number and coverage of acidophilous, oligotrophic and skiophilous species, and a promotion of basophilous, eutrophic and heliophilous ones. There is also a decline in the abundance and cover of geophytes, chamephytes and phanerophytes, and an increase in the role of bryophytes (as well as therophytes and hemicryptophytes in the case of badger setts). Where dens are concerned, species characteristic for the Vaccinio-Piceetea Br.-Bl. 1939 and QuercoFagetea Br.-Bl. et Vlieg. 1937 classes are less significant, and those typical for Artemisietea vulgaris Lohm., Prsg et R.Tx1971950moresignificant. On badger setts, species characteristic of the class Epilobietea angustifoliae R.Tx. et Prsg 1950 are also more significant. The disturbanes brought about by the activity of badgers are more evident than those induced by foxes, but they do not differ in terms of their ecological nature.
Changes in the chemical composition, nitrogen content of water extracts, weight loss and shear force of meat from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) bucks were analysed during 21-day cold storage (2°C) under modified atmosphere conditions (vacuum; 40% CO2 + 60% N2; 60% CO2 + 40% N2). A gradual increase in drip loss was observed over the storage period. The process of cold storage of roebuck meat in a modified atmosphere (MA) had no significant effect on the content of major chemical components. The dynamics of changes in the content of nitrogen compounds in water extracts of cold-stored meat was lower in MA-packaged samples, compared to the vacuum-packaged samples. The relatively low rate of protein degradation (proteolysis) in roebuck meat during ageing was reflected in the lack of considerable changes in the average values of shear force.
