Coagulant dosing control (CDC) is necessary to ensure stable treated water quality and to reduce chemical costs both in drinking and wastewater treatment plants. The rapid development in online sensors and equipment as well as control strategies has triggered a significant development in CDC. Software sensors, streaming current detectors, charge titration units, potential dispersion analyzers etc. are now successfully used. Despite the significant advancement in the introduction and use of these novel techniques, most plants still relay on simple CDC techniques like flow proportional dosing, leaving great opportunities to reduce the coagulant costs, sludge treatment costs while achieving better treatment efficiencies overall. The paper presents a novel concept to optimize coagulant dosing control in wastewater treatment plants, and an intention to develop a widely available solution using a Polish-Norwegian Research & Development venture.
Wastewater treatment is becoming ever more critical due to diminishing water resources, increasing wastewater disposal costs, and stricter discharge regulations that have lowered permissible contaminant levels in waste streams. The ultimate goal of wastewater management is the protection of the environment in a manner commensurate with public health and socio-economic concerns. The aim of our study is to use natural occurring polymeric coagulant to reduce the chemical oxygen demand and color from the industrial waste water. It was found that 83 % of Chemical oxygen demand and 90 % of color reduction was observed with chitosan.
The meat industry is characterized by high water consumption. Since this wastewater is highly loaded, it should be thoroughly pre-treated prior to its discharge into receiving water. Our investigations revealed that a hybrid system of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis is a promising purification method. Its application resulted in a 100% and 98.8% removal of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds, respectively. The efficiency of COD and BOD removal exceeded 99%.
Sulfatide (galactosylceramide I3 -sulfate) has been reported to activate blood coagulation factor XII (Hageman factor), which suggests that it exhibits coagulant activity (Fujikama et al., 1980 Biochemistry 19, 1322-1330) However, sulfatide administered into animals as a bolus shot without subsequent thrombus formation, prolonged conventional clotting times and bleeding time (Hara et al., 1996 Glycoconjugate J. 13, 187-194). These findings suggest that it may exhibit anticoagulant rather than coagulant activity. Following this suggestion we found in vitro that binding of sulfatide to fibrinogen resulted in disturbance of fibrin formation. To examine a possible pharmacological effect of sulfatide on blood coagulation in vivo we continuously infused sulfatide into rats through plastic cannulae and found formation of giant thrombi around the tips of the cannulae. These data suggest that sulfatide may exhibit contradictory functions in the blood coagulation system.
This study examined the influence of ferric and aluminium coagulants (PIX 113 and PAX 18) and ferrous sulphate, used for lake restoration, on growth and mortality of cladocerans Daphnia magna Straus. We observed that addition of these coagulants in concentrations comparable to those used in various restored lakes reduced significantly the increase of Daphnia biomass comparing to the results obtained in the samples without coagulants. This phenomenon was directly proportional to the coagulant concentration. Ferrous sulphate turns out to have been the most toxic compound, while PAX 18 was the less harmful. Ferric coagulants also caused crustacean mortality ranging from 4 to 36%.
