Background. Selenium belongs to important microelements. Numerous studies have revealed relationships between its deficiency and occurrence of diverse illnesses, but the question of the proper form and dose of Se-supplementation still remains unsolved. Objective. In the present study the influence of different selenium compounds on blood morphology and biochemistry as well as on phagocytic capacity of granulocytes and NBT test in rats was investigated. Material and methods. Adolescent male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (ten animals each): I – control, received saline; II – received sodium selenite Na2SeO3; III – received selenoorganic compound A of chain structure 4-(o-tolyl-)-selenosemicarbazide of 2-chlorobenzoic acid; IV – received selenoorganic compound B of cyclic structure 3-(2-chlorobenzoylamino-)- 2-(o-tolylimino-)-4-methyl-4-selenazoline. The administration was performed by stomach tube at a dose of 5 · 10-4 mg Se g-1 b.w. once a day for 10 days. Results. Selenium compounds treatment decreased haematocrit. Erythrocytes number was unchanged in all groups receiving Se vs. control, whereas leucocytes number was depressed in groups II and IV. Haemoglobin was significantly decreased in group III. White blood count was altered in groups II and III, where all parameters were markedly decreased except for lymphocytes in group III and remained unchanged in group IV. The outcomes regarding selenium effect on biochemistry parameters of blood showed that urea remained unchanged, glucose was statistically decreased in groups II and III, whereas cholesterol was significantly diminished in group II and increased in group III vs. control. Results concerning phagocytosis and NBT test displayed that % of positive cells were decreased in groups II and III, whereas remained unaltered in group IV vs. control. Conclusions. As cyclic selenoorganic compound B did not cause many significant changes of the studied parameters it may be suggested that after further researches it could be taken into account as a possible selenium supplement.
Our study examined changes in the red blood system of rats under the influence of aluminium chloride administered in a physiological way with drinking water in the following doses : 0.5 g/l, 1 g/l and 2 g/l. The significant decrease of erythrocyte numbers, haemoglobin levels and haematocrit values which accompanied the highly significant statistical elevation in reticulocyte contents were observed in intoxicated animals. Also, the decrease of mean cell volume (MCV), average diameter of erythrocyte (D) and its surface area (S) were noted. Respiratory surface of blood volume unit (Sresp.) and coefficient F in group received AlCl3 at doses of 0.5 g/l were slightly higher then in control group. Groups that received 1 g/l and 2 g/l decreased in Sresp. and coeficcient F. Our data showed that aluminium intoxication impairs respiratory function of the blood.
In 230 mice from 12 inbred strains (A.CA/W, AKR/W, BALB/cW, BN/aW, CBA/W, CBA-T6/W,C3H/W, C57BL/6W, C57BL/10W, DBA2/W, 129S1/SvW, HLB219/J) the following parameters were measured: the total number of white (WBC) and red (RBC) blood cells, haemoglobin concentration (HGB), haematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and platelets (PLT) number. Highly significant interstrain differences were shown within RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV and PLT.

Plasmapheresis in the treatment of trichinellosis

84%
Four patients with severe form of trichinellosis were treated with plasmapheresis. We noticed clinical improvement and favourable alterations in laboratory profiles (morphology and immune response parameters in the bood). The effect of plasmapheresis therapy in patients with trichinellosis was considered beneficial. No major complications of plasmapheresis were observed.
The aim of the study was to determine the total antioxidant status in the plasma of horses - Standardbred trotters, exposed to extreme oxygen action during a race. The experiment was carried out on 10 two-year old horses - five stallions and five mares, after three-month-long initial training. On the experimental day, peripheral blood was sampled twice from the horses: at rest and after a race over 3200 m at a pace of 550 m/min. In the blood were assayed: blood platelet, white blood cell and red blood cell counts as well as haematocrit value and haemoglobin concentration. The obtained values were the basis for calculating plasma dehydration factor (Df). In the plasma was determined the antioxidative ability of plasma (AAP). For assays, a TAS (Total Antioxidant Status) analytical kit of Randox manufacture (UK) was used. In 8/10 horses, the AAP value underwent a reduction after the race. The statistical analysis revealed a significant decrease in AAP value in horses after completing the race (Pp = 0.0126). This difference correlates with the value of Df factor (R² = 0.304), which may mean that prolonged organism overloading with intensive oxygen work leads to progressive exhaustion of its antioxidative reserves and in consequence, after crossing the critical value, to development of oxygen stress. The largest decrease of AAP value occurred in the horses capable of performing the largest effort (ΔTAS = 0.20 ± 0.14 mol/dm³). These animals, i.e. three stallions and three mares, were characterised by a lower heartbeat rate and a lower respiration frequency at rest as well as by the capacity for quick regeneration of these parameters after the completed race.
