The wooden sacral architecture in Poland is a phenomenon on its own rights. Its development was shaped by a long-term evolution, continuity of tradition, resposiveness to various inspirations and the emergence of abundant types, forms and varieties of construction. The author described in detail the development of this type of architecture up to the end of the 19th century when it entered its declining stages.
The beginnings of wooden architecture of orthodox churches in Poland are not sufficiently documented in sources. The oldest churches vanished or have been destroyed. The orthodox church at Ulucz on the banks of San River is regarded as the oldest surviving object (dated 1510). The churches of ŁEMKOWIE of Sącz, Gorlice, and Jasło regions form a separate group. Tall church towers with chambers following the style of Roman catholic churches are characteristic, although not a primary feature of this group. The orthodox churches situated far east, in the Carpathians, are of much more diversified character.
