The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effect of spaying on antioxidant defence mechanism and lipid peroxidation in healthy bitches. Thirty-one healthy bitches were used in the study. All the animals were anaesthetised with xylazine-ketamine combination and subjected to total ovariohysterectomy (OVH). The blood glutathione (GSH), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), ceruloplasmin, β-carotene, and retinol levels were determined in the preoperative and early postoperative periods. There was a significant decrease in blood GSH levels and an increase in plasma MDA activity at early postoperative stage as compared to the stage before the operation. There were no significant differences in the concentration of β-carotene, retinol, and ceruloplasmin levels between the preoperative and early postoperative periods. In conclusion, these findings indicate some alterations in the antioxidant defence system in the early postoperative stage. The assessment of GSH and MDA levels can be useful for the evaluation of oxidative stress after OVH in bitches.
The present study deals with the estimation of antioxidant levels in blood of sewage and garage workers exposed to sewage water, washing water and vehicular air pollution compared with control group of population. The study areas were selected on the basis of drainage clearance and wards where workers are active as sewage workers. For garage workers, the garage selected was a large and busy one where continuous vehicles washing, repairing etc are carried out. These two exposed groups were compared to non-exposed group of population as control. The blood samples were collected from two groups of exposed population as well as control population and the antioxidant levels were estimated in blood. The present results clearly indicate that there was decreasing trend of the antioxidant level in blood for sewage and garage workers. In the control groups of population the antioxidant levels were found to be within normal range, but for sewage workers (0.14-0.36 mM) and garage workers (0.12-0.36 mM) the antioxidant levels were significantly lower. The range of antioxidant level in human blood is 0.5 to 2.0 mM. It was found to be significantly lower (P < 0.001 or 0.05) in addicted sewage and garage workers when compared with non-addicted groups. All the exposed groups were showed to be having significantly lower antioxidant level when compared to control groups. This study is a preliminary assessment to know the potent biomarkers for oxidative stress and estimation of antioxidant level in blood due to occupational exposure. This study shows a way for easy screening of biomarker assessment but further work is needed in relation to biochemical, enzymological and genetic damage study.
Chilling is one of the major abiotic stress which limites yield and quality of many crops. The seedlings of rice varieties namely Koshihikari (Japonica subtype) chilling tolerant, and the susceptible NMR2 (Indica subtype) were treated at 25/15 °C and 5/4 °C day/night to determine the growth parameters, phenolic contents, and antioxidant activity. It was found that in all treatments, the growth of MNR2 including root and shoot lengths, and leaf and root weights were inhibited at greater levels than Koshihikari. There were seven phenolic acids identified in leaves of Koshihikari including caffeic acid, vanillin, ferulic acid, sinapic acid, benzoic acid, ellagic acid, and cinamic acid, but only benzoic acid and ellagic acid were found in leaves of MNR2. In contrast, only vanillic acid and ellagic acid were observed in roots of Koshihikari, whilst ellagic acid and cinnamic acid were found in roots of MNR2. It was found that rice reduced amount of phenolic acids but promoted quantity of total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) and level of antioxidant activity in chilling stress, although the level of responses varied between Japonica and Indica subtypes. Tolerant rice possessed greater bound flavonoids, phenolics and phenolic acids, but susceptible rice accumulated greater free TPC and TFC in reduced temperature. Findings of this study highlighted that phenolic constituents in bound forms of phenols, polyphenols, and flavonoids may play an active role in rice plants than phenolic acids under chilling stress but need further elaboration.
