The problem of efficient water resources use is characterized in this article. The water footprint issue of agri-food products, as an indicator of the agriculture and the food industry impact on the natural environment, is discussed. Activities undertaken in the field of environmental protection and resource efficiency are associated with measurable benefits for enterprises, resulting from the introduction of sustainable production principles.
Despite the vast natural ressources in terms of area, agriculture has not been able to exploit its potential to its full extent, in spite of huge efforts and — in most countries — succesful developments, restructuring of agriculture and the food industries is still far from being finished- There is need to persuade more market elements into the agri-food proccessors. The key priorities of the Slovak agri-food sector have to be: market and trade policy, structure of agricultural enterprises, know-how and overtaking the experiences, monitoring, evalution and program control of modernisation and inovation, education of managers and economists.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are handled differently in different countries. Whereas global acreage of GMOs jumped to 134 million hectares in 2009 [Cultivation... 2010], in many European countries opposition to GMOs is still strong, and their acreage is very small. This situation poses a difficult situation for many companies and their corporate social responsibility [CSR] strategies. Against this background, we conducted an online survey of 170 agribusiness firms in order to shed some light on how companies handle the conflict between, on the one hand, the growing use of GMOs worldwide and, on the other, the rejection of GMOs by European consumers. The empirical results show that many agribusiness firms perceive the use of GMOs as a highly relevant management issue that shapes their CSR strategies. All in all, agribusiness firms apply a wide spectrum of CSR activities; furthermore, CSR is considered a top management responsibility. GMOs are of aboveaverage relevance in firms that have been criticized for their attitudes towards and use of GMOs. The empirical results have interesting implications for the management of CSR and legitimacy in the agribusiness sector.
Accommodation processes of agriculture and food economy to requirements of market economy are factors affecting changes in relations between agro-food industry and farmers. They are changing relations concerning spatial connections, quantities of raw material delivered as well as legal forms of cooperations. They are also a moving force behind structural and ownership transformations of agricultural products processing units. The changes should strengthen a vertical integration of food industry, agriculture and trade. They should also eradicate difficulties resulting from different degree of development of individual elements of food economy e.g. to accelerate organizfational and technical development of purchase, storage and processing of agricultural products. In effect the marketing position of individual participant of food economy chain should be strengthened.
