The aim of this paper is to compare the chemistry of surface waters taken from two areas: Poland (Wielkopolska) and Lithuania. These two areas have different environments and different agricultural utilization. The high concentration of both nutritive compounds and dissolved humic substances were found in the Wielkopolska Region, where a great proportion of cultivated fields and intensive agrotechnics are observed. Surface waters located in Lithuania, with a high percentage of wasteland such as bogs, pastures and meadows, showed much lower concentrations of the analysed components. The analysis of content of heavy metals in surface waters showed much greater concentrations of manganese, lead and zinc in Lithuanian water, which can be related to considerable atmospheric pollution of this area.
The aim of the study was to examine the agrotouristic farms operating in Biebrza National Park regarding their land resource and its exploitation, utilization of agricultural production. The study was conducted in 2010 and 2011 in 25 farms. The source material was collected through direct interviews. The questionnaire directed to the farms owners was used as a research tool. Obtained results were related to 2010. The average size of the surveyed agricultural farm area was 18.47 ha. The farms with agricultural land above 20 ha amounted to 36%. The raw food was used for the purpose of tourists and families nutrition in 40,7% of the analyzed farms. Additionally 46,3% of raw food was allocated for sale, and 13% was used for the purpose of agricultural production. Based on the conducted studies, it was determined that some of the surveyed farms owners were not actively farming, however benefited from the privileges of providing cost-free touristic services, which have become the main source of the income in the farm.
In an agricultural landscape small midfield ponds fulfill biocenotic and physiocenotic functions. A variety of species settle in areas of midfield ponds. The aim of our studies was to determine whether the occurrence of aquatic and marsh species in the studied bodies of water is a random effect or a result of spatial autocorrelation. On the basis of conclusions from ESDA, the hypothesis of spatial randomness can be rejected, which opens the way for searching spatial regimes. The review analysis of the spatial data (ESDA) with the use of join-count statistics showed that there is a positive spatial correlation for the midfield ponds in the agricultural area of the Pyrzyce-Stargard Plain in the distribution of ten aquatic and rush species for a distance of 1,250 m. The results of statistical analysis (ESDA) can constitute the basis for the choice and protection of midfield ponds as stop islands fulfilling functions of "mini" ecological corridors in spreading plant species.
Understanding factors that drive the choice of breeding habitats for birds is important for species management and conservation. We addressed this question in the case of the European Roller Coradas garrulus, an endangered species listed in Annex I of the European Union directive for bird conservation. For secondary hole-nesting birds, such as rollers, the breeding micro- and macrohabitat selection may rely on the location of the nest hole in a tree and its immediate surrounding environment as well as the larger scale foraging habitat. We used both of these criteria to compare the characteristics of Green Woodpecker Picus viridis holes that either were or were not occupied by breeding pairs of the European Roller. Our study was carried out in an agricultural landscape of southeastern France where the population of European Roller is trending towards an increase. When compared to unoccupied holes, occupied holes were at a lower height (approx. 6 m above ground) and were preferentially located in dead trees with other holes in close vicinity. Occupied holes were also located in landscapes with lower land use intensity (i.e., higher proportions of meadows, fallow lands, and fewer hedgerows and built areas) than non-occupied holes. Finally, fallow lands and meadows harboured more Orthoptera, an important food resource for rollers, than other land cover categories. Thus, our results highlight the importance of these land covers for the species management and indicate that they may be favourable areas for nest-box provisioning.
Traditional agricultural measures are still necessary for maintenance of endangered endogenous species of plants and animals in ecologically valuable habitats. Poland is one of the countries of the highest biodiversity of agricultural lands in Europe, however, the intensification of agriculture and farming resulted with regular decrease of valuable wildlife species. Abandonment of agricultural use of traditionally pastoral areas induced the encroachment of species that reduce local biodiversity. To counteract this undesirable process, several organisations re-introduce Konik polski horses into wastelands. The aim of this overview is to share the experiences of institutions which used Konik polski horses as a mean for biodiversity restoration in post-agricultural and forest areas, including expected effects, their implementation and main problems encountered. The aims, positive and negative effects are presented and discussed.
Soil contamination of areas covered by industrial plants and farms is one of the major environmental problems whose weight is underestimated in Poland and Europe. Such regions are usually not as exposed to direct pollution as highly urbanized industrial areas. On the other hand, they are usually less strictly monitored than protected areas. The District of Olkusz, an example of such a region, is characterized by well-developed agriculture, regressing local industry and growing tourism industry. However, it borders with Silesia, a heavily industrized area. The study reports the condition of arable soils in Olkusz District in terms of their contamination with lead, cadmium, zinc and copper. The atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) method was used to determine the concentrations of the metallic elements. The parameters like pH, content of the clay fraction and content of organic matter have been also taken in consideration to assess the bioavailability of the metals. The analytical results showed that, despite the decreasing impact of the local industry, levels of concentration of all the studied metals are significantly higher than their average concentration in Polish soils. Moreover, all the calculated Pearson correlation coefficients between concentrations of the metals were above 0.9, which means they correlate each other strongly. The impact of the local pollutants (mainly Bukowno smelter) in connection with the proximity of the Silesia and the high vulnerability for contamination of the soils precludes agricultural use of the ground in at least half of the cases.
Zaprezentowano ogólną charakterystykę metodyki programowania oraz projektowania i realizacji scaleń gruntów gospodarstw indywidualnych w ujęciu statycznym i dynamicznym. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na procedury: ustalenia celowości, stopnia pilności i pożądanej kolejności poddawania scaleniom gruntów obrębów wiejskich o dominacji rolnictwa indywidualnego; optymalizacji struktury obszarowej scalonych gospodarstw oraz wielkości powierzchni i kształtów projektowanych działek. Artykuł jest streszczeniem głównych tez metodycznych rozprawy doktorskiej autora nt. „Nowe podejście do scaleń w przekształcaniu struktury przestrzennej indywidualnych gospodarstw rolnych". Podając ważniejsze wnioski odnośnie proponowanej metodyki, podkreślono jej obiektywizm oraz przydatność praktyczną popartą wynikami badań terenowych.
Studies on the dynamics of concentrations and discharge of nitrogen load through draining systems were carried out in Olsztyn Lake District (Pojezierze Olsztyńskie) from 1994 to 2007. For the tests, three basins were selected: an agricultural basin drained with a drainage system, an agricultural and forested basin drained with a network of ditches and drains, and an agriculrual basin with a large forest cover (ca 30%), drained with ditches. The discharge of water through the draining facilities was measured every two weeks, and once a month, N-NO3, N-NO2, N-NH4 as well as Kjeldahl nitrogen were determined. It has been demonstrated that the volume of discharged water carried away through draining systems depends primarily on the amount and distribution of atmospheric precipitation, epsecially during the winter half-year. The dynamics of concentrations and loads of nitrogen in water discharged via draining systems varied with time and depended not only on the amount and distribution of precipitation over a year and in the multi-year period, but also on the type of land use in a given basin and a draining system. It was also found out that intensive rainfall in summer only slightly increased the discharge of water from the basin drained with the drainage system. The load of total nitrogen flowing away through the draining systems from agricultural basins was closely connected with the amount of discharged water and water levels of mineral nitrogen compounds, especially N-NO3. The highest nitrogen loss from drained areas appeared in spring, which was associated with the seasonal character of water outflow, culminating in March-April. The highest concentration of total nitrogen (16.69 mg dm-3) was determined in water discharged through the network of ditches and drains, but due to a more intensive dewatering of soils, a higher total nitrogen load (on average 33% more) was discharged through drains. Per 1 ha of an agricultural basin, the annual outflow of total nitrogen was up to 13.13 kg, including 12.04 kg of mineral nitrogen.
Seydisuyu Basin, which contains very important agricultural areas and boron deposits of Turkey, is located in Eskişehir province. In this paper, the groundwater quality of Seydisuyu Basin was evaluated by using some physiochemical (temperature, conductivity, salinity, and demanded oxygen) and chemical (boron and arsenic) parameters. Groundwater samples were collected seasonally (2011-12) from 14 wells from the Seydisuyu Basin and all of the data obtained experimentally were compared with national and international drinking and usage water standards. Also, cluster analysis (CA) was applied to the results to classify the stations according to the contents of arsenic and boron levels by using the Past package program, factor analysis (FA) was applied to the results to classify the affective factors on groundwater quality, and Pearson Correlation Index was applied to the results to determine the relations of parameters by using the SPSS 17 package program. According to data, arsenic and boron accumulations of wells were higher than the drinking water limits specified by the Turkish Standards Institute (TS266), European Communities (EC), and World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Water Standards. According to the results of FA, three effective factors that explain 76.36% of the total variance was detected and arsenic-boron contents of groundwater were positively loaded with the second factor, named as “Boron Works and Environmental Factor.” According to results of CA identified by using arsenic and boron accumulations, station 1, which was the closest well to the boron facility, showed the highest distance and lowest similarity with the other stations.
Background. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a ubiquitous disease. However, PDs prevalence in the population of agricultural communities lacks understanding and there has been no epidemiological study on the association between pesticides exposure factors and risk for PD. Objective. To investigate the potential association between organophosphate pesticides exposure and Parkinsonism by using a screening questionnaire in agricultural areas. Material and Methods. Ninety elderly people living in agricultural areas participated in a cross-sectional study conducted at Tambon Hua-Rua Health Promoting Hospital in April 2014. Screening questionnaires for Parkinson’s disease, Test-mate ChE (Model 400) for blood cholinesterase (ChE) levels of both blood enzymes erythrocyte cholinesterase (AChE), and plasma cholinesterase (PChE) were used as measurement tools. Descriptive statistics for frequencies and percentage distributions were used primarily to summarize and describe the data. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated. Results. The age range of the participants was 50 to 59 years old, with an average age of 53.9+2.87 years. The majority of the participants were female (62.2%), 82.2% of respondents were farmers. Most of participants (76.7%) reported that they applied insecticides in their farms. Ninety persons participated and completed the 11-item questionnaire. Of these, 17 (18.9%) felt that they lost balance when turning or that they needed to take a few steps to turn right around and 16.7% of participants indicated that they felt the need to move slowly or stiffly. The study found the prevalence of abnormal AChE levels was 28.9% (95%CI=19.81-39.40) and 17.8% of PChE levels (95%CI=10.52-27.26). To predict Parkinsonism, AChE, and PChE level, with a cutoff score of 5 or higher there had to be a sensitivity of 0.31, specificity of 1.00, positive predictive value (PPV) of 1.00 and negative predictive value (NPV) of 0.78 for AChE. While PChE, the score value of 5 or more had a sensitivity of 0.19, specificity of 0.93, PPV of 0.38 and NPV of 0.84. Conclusion. This study described an association between pesticides exposure and Parkinsonism. The questionnaire appears to be useful for Thai agriculturists as a screening tool for Parkinsonism and cholinesterase levels regarding to pesticides exposure.
