Celluloid, polystyrene, polyesters (styresol), phenol-formaldehyde resins as bakelite (known as African amber), novolac, resole resins, casein plastics (galalite) were studied.
The aim of the research, in which the questionnaire method was used, was to analyse food preferences and their determinants within the group of persons selected on the basis of sex. On the basis of the research results it can be stated that the features of food were pointed most often among the factors conditioning the food preferences. Simultaneously the features of food were most often acknowledged for the reason of not liking some food. It appeared that the food preferences of the examined population produced the evidence with enough large stability. However more frequent changes were observed in the direction from the lack of acceptance of some food to the food liking. The features of the population in a little degree differentiated the food preferences and the opinions about factors that determine these preferences.
Background. Foodstuffs fortified with vitamins and/or minerals are nowadays continually being developed, leading to an increasing diversity of these products being available on the market. This contributes to increased consumption of added nutrients, which can be an effective tool for improving public health. Objectives. To identify and characterise products fortified with vitamins, available on the Warsaw foodstuff market, which can thereby be used as a source of information for the assessment of dietary micronutrient intake. Material and methods. Data were gathered using the information provided on labels from foodstuff products found in 14 Warsaw supermarkets during March to October 2012. Results. There were 588 products found to be fortified with vitamins. The number of vitamins added ranged from one in 193 products to twelve in 14 products. The group of vitamins used for enrichment consisted of: A, D, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid and biotin. Juices, non-alcoholic beverages (29.4%) and cereal products (18.9%) constituted the largest product groups. In addition, fortified vitamins were also significantly present in sweets (15.8%), instant beverages and desserts (13.6%), milk products, fat spreads and soy products. The most frequently added vitamins were: vitamin C (58% products), vitamin B6 (46%) and B12 (45%), whilst the least frequently added was biotin (16%). The highest content of vitamins A and D were seen in fat spreads, whereas the highest levels of B vitamins, vitamin C and E were observed in certain sweets. Conclusions. The wide range of fortified products available can serve to increase vitamin intake in many population groups, especially in children and teenagers. In order that consumers can make informed choices in buying these product types, appropriate education is necessary to raise public awareness of the health issues involved.
Background. Obesity is well known cause of various diseases. However, there are only a few studies which enable to compare directly the magnitude of risk in different groups of chronic diseases. Objectives. The aim of presented paper was to identify a magnitude of the risk of chronic diseases attributable to overweight and obesity on the basis of data on weight and height self-reported by respondents. Material and methods. The survey was conducted among 402 Warsaw inhabitants selected by non-random method. Overweight and obesity was measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) on the basis of the data of weight and height reported by respondents. According to WHO criteria the normal weight is defined as BMI 18.5 - 24.9 kg/m2, overweight as BMI 25.0 - 29.9 kg/m2, and obesity as BMI 30 kg/m2 or more. The following groups of chronic diseases were included: cancer, diabetes and other endocrine diseases, mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, arthritis and allergy disorder. Results. Obesity measured by self-reported method was recognised as significant risk factor for diabetes (OR=9.6, Cl: 2.0152.8), respiratory diseases (OR=10.6, Cl: 3,0-333,7), cardiovascular diseases (OR=5.2, Cl: 1.9-108.3), arthritis (OR=6.3, Cl: 2.4-266.7), digestive diseases (OR=3,8, Cl: 1.3-83.6) and mental disorders (OR=5.8, Cl: 1.5-29.1), while overweight significantly increased the risk of diabetes (OR=4.4, Cl: 1.2-10.8), respiratory diseases (OR=3.2, Cl: 1.4-22.2), cardiovas- culardiseases (OR=2.9, Cl: 1.2-6.4) andarthritis (OR=3.0, Cl: 1.1-9.6) Conclusions. Our findings showed that data on weight and height collected by survey method provide some information about the magnitude of the risk regarding particular groups of diseases attributable to overweight and obesity, nevertheless, underestimation ofBMI calculated in this way should be taken into account.
The aim of the paper is an analysis of low flows – a phenomenon of persistent low water levels and flows in the riverbed – of the Vistula River at the Warszawa-Nadwilanówka gauging station. The study concerned the beginning of the 21st century, against the 1951–2000 period. In order to determine the low flows on the daily flows hydrographs, they were cut-off by the threshold level method. According to the adopted criterion, low flows are rather rare on the Vistula in Warsaw. The longest and most severe drought in terms of outflow deficit occurred in 1951. In the last years of the studied period (2003, 2012, 2015), droughts have reached a considerable sizes, but were no greater than the low flow observed in 1951. Since 1985 no winter low flows have been recorded.
